Thanks Kadi, she is a tough little thing, just built like a bird
When she fell off, the grooms and other riders all came to check she was OK, I think they thought I was mean to make her get back on . Today , when they saw her in a sling, they think I am an utter cow !!!!
But now she gets to join the fracture club !! She is the 3rd broken collar bone in 5 months !!

Dont worry I am mean too. As long as I dont see a body part hanging off or there is no blood etc then I make the children get back on even if it is only around the school for one circuit in walk.
I hope lil one is better soon and hasnt been put off riding naughty pony x

Bless her for getting back on x
I broke my collar bone falling off a twelve hand pony who was more like a motorbike and could turn on a tanner, he decided he wanted to go home so ran off through the forest came to what looked like a bomb crater and promptly dodged it for me to go sailing through the air and land on the side of my shoulder
shattering my collar bone, it hurt like hell and I had to walk two miles back to the yard as I couldn't get back on.
I was riding after two weeks and had trouble getting dressed for a week. Hope it heals quickly it should do young bones and all that. Your not a horrible mummy the amount of times I've fallen off much worse than the above incident and didn't break anything, if I'd of gone to hospital for everytime I fell off the hospital would of charged me rent !

lol Chinarider !
I had two x-ray folders full, I became quite a regular at my local A & E even the lady on reception knew my first name. The doctor even asked me why I continued to pursue horse riding ! I was only about 13 and looked at him in disgust ! As if I could give up my beloved horses the cheek !

Oh Dear!!!
Your not the only one,I'm guilty as well, last summer when daughter broker her shoulder she was yelling and screamingit hurt but all I said was comeon get back on, wasnt til she couldnt move I realsied maybe she was hurt this time.
You would think I had learnt my lesson but last saturday, I left her and her friend riding for 10 minutes in the school she came off and fell onto a pole, she kept saying how much her finger hurt but me being me told her to get on with it an stop winging. Her whole hand was black and blue Sunday moring so took her to get it checked just in case and yep - she has cracked a bonein her little finger. Maybe next time I will take bit more notice. And of course then theres the time her first pony stampedon her foot and broke a bone, I really should take more notice of her!!!
Hope your daughter soon heals and in the mean time just spoil her, its wont make you feel so guilty - honest!!!

Sounds like your not the only one! Last September my sister fell off, I was at work and one of the other ladies at the yard drive her home after Becci insisting she didnt need to go to hospital...so I get a call a few hours later, saying come home because she does need to go to hospital...I was like dont be so silly you will be fine till I finish work...so I get home later (my mum and dad were on holiday typically!) and she is sitting there crying, going everything hurts, then she says help me get up so I pulled her up by her arm, she is screaming in pain, I wa slike well you asked me to help and you gave me your hand! I aint good with ill people! SO called ambulance, lovely paramedics in ambulance and fast response car, took her to hospital and turned out she had broken her collar bone, fractured 3 ribs and fractured her should joint...whoops! Well how was I to know? :D

Yes but as Mothers you tend to brush them off and tell them to get on with it. You feel the need to give them the confidence to say "O well I fell, so what". If you pamper them and make such a fuss of them falling off then it kills their fragile nerves so quickly..;) I would of done exactly the same...so dont feel guilty.

My sis fell off and broke her arm when we were kids and the instructor made her get back on again - thankfully I've never broken anything coming off a horse!

Echo that. Small Boy has had some spectacular falls at speed on his pony and I have told him to get straight back on and it seems not to have harmed him in any way.:D :D :D

I broke my arm when I was six, at a riding school. They made me get back on and wouldn't believe it was broken at first. Finally did, and my mum took me to the doctor who sent me straight to hospital! I always wonder though - if they hadn't made me get back on straight away, would I have had the confidence to get back on again when the arm had healed?

I broke my wrist when I was about 11 falling off a pony who went to a point at the front - not so much a chest as a bow :) Out the side door, hand down to 'save' myself and snappity snap ! Anyone could see it was broken, the back of my hand went down in a V shape and my fingers all pointed at the sky, plus it blew up like it had been inflated with a pump
Problem was I was in a field a long way from any vehicle and it was either get back on (with hand wrapped in cardigan and tied round my neck as a sling!) or walk. Adrenaline won out and I was back on pony and led back to the yard ashen faced and in silent tears. Then it was a trip up a bumpy lane in an ancient Spitfire and on to the hospital!
Plastered up to the elbow and back on (different) pony the next week - much to my mum's horror!

My mum has a "laissez faire" attitude...translates as "leave well alone" GCSE histroy teacher still haunts me in my sleep making us chant that phrase as you got an extra mark if you knew it
As mean you feel now, looking back your daughter will love you for it. I had a fall at a my riding stables and broke my arm, the yard wouldn't let me get back on as I was obviously injured (mum was trying to encouragme me to just mount and sit and walk around) as there insurance didnt cover it.
It nearly ruined my confidence.
Yet a year later I had a fall when I landed on my wrist, didn't tell anyone it hurt so continued riding in pain. Mum then later didn't believe me it hurt as I'd continued riding. So I figured it wasn't wasn't having a break if I wasn't going to get it checked out...so continued riding! 6months later, getting checked over after another fall, Doc asked me when I'd broken my wrist as it wasn't on my records :D Did make mum feel slightly guilty!
However it never knocked my confidence, because I'd got straight back on after falling.
However mean you feel, it will have been the best thing for your daughters confidence

Hehe, no, I like the attitude to be honest but hope your daughter recovers well and quickly!
Makes me think of my friend's story about when she was competing as a child and fell off her pony at a jump, badly winded, immobile on the ground, could have been paralysed .. her mum came running over, face creased in anxiety and hissed "Get up! You're embarrassing me!!"

*sigh* I know all about that one.
I had a fall jumping, landed heavily on my arm, am sitting their moaning at the pain...to see my mum leading the pony back across the arena. Her thoughts were that I was sitting up, so couldn't be that bad...and the pony might trip over his reins and break a leg (in the end I had a broken arm)
Another fall I landed face first, and stood up bleeding from the mouth. Mum decided, seeing as I was trying to stand up, to go get the horse to stop him causing mischief within the ride.
The again, I had my own back, whenever she fell off I'd walk over and grab the horse first...not at all worried at how my mum was, I'd just walk the horse around in circles whilst my instrctor looked after mum :D
Nice to know we both had our priorities correct!

i stumbled across this thread and was very shocked with most of what i read ! The general feeling seems to be, I'm a tough horsey mum and seem to think it quite ok for a small child to hurt themselves and be shoved back on a pony ! My little girl was 6yrs when she fell off a friends pony, she was crying and in alot of pain, she wanted to get back on because one of the older kids had told her that if you don't get straight back on after a fall you might loose your nerve and never ride again ! I told her it was a load of rubbish, and that we were gonna get her arm checked out, and if she was ok she could ride the next day. We went to A & E and were told she had a nasty fractured shoulder, I felt soooooo guilty ! She wasn't allowed back on that or any other pony for about 4months, until her shoulder had completely heeled. It never did her nerve any harm, she was champing at the bit to get back on. She is now 9ys and a cracking little rider, and I'm sure there will be many more falls to come from both her and her little sister who now also rides ! But, there really is no shame in putting your kid's feeling's first.......

Usually I can tell by the pitch of scream as to how hurt they are, but I'm a tough mum too. When my daughter lost her balance in a riding lesson, she squealed as the horse shot forwards, horse then careered around the school with me calmly saying 'stop screaming and hang onto the mane'. Daughter replied as she flew through the air ' I can't its hogged !'
RI ran over to daughter while I went straight to horse to soothe it after its fright !
Naughty mum. Daughter bit shocked and bruised but got back on. Good girl.'

Gosh i must be very hard!!Fortunately Aimee doesnt fall of much but she did come a right cropper doing gymkana, she was 6 ish, anyway she went out side door and screamed, her dad ran over picked her up and dusted her off,i fetched pony(billy) back, shoved her on asked how many fingers, she replied correctly, and away she went.We spent that night and following day in hospital with concusion!OOOPS!
I'm afraid one of favourite sayings is 'unless your spurting blood or your arm/legs is hanging by a thread' i don't want to know:pshe takes it well and gets in with it!!

No, not any more, used to live in a small village called Westerfield, just outside Ipswich, then later moved to Woodbridge, but alas that was quite a few years ago.
Loved Newton Hall, started off on a grey pony called Swallow who I loved, sometimes rode a slightly bad tempered mare called Ginny (Regina ) too, back in the days when you had to wear a hacking jacket and a hairnet !
Do you ever go there now ?

Sorry to hear about your daughter ~ poor mite ~ but she'll soon heal.
My daughter broke both collar bones at one time a few years back, and we bought a 'V' shaped pillow to have in bed, and on the sofa. Worked well as it's all round support.
Don't feel too guilty ~ my own GP failed to diagnose his son had broken both his wrists!! He always tells me that story if I take the kids in! :D
