I figure I'm most likely to get a do-able response in here ;)

Basically Daffy has a fantabulous extended trot, when the moment is right for me to ask for it.

Not bad for a heavily on the forehand pony, generally being a pain in the *rse and rushing through a failed canter transition when the photo was taken. Schooling has much improved, but we're not ready for proper extensions yet.

However I want some extension when trotting inhand for this years shows. Any ideas on how best to get it?

I just get the horse trotting alongside me, then lengthen my strides, and the horse lengthens theirs. :)

sme here - and to start teaching it, i click or say 'trot-trot-trot' in time with the strides. if you click slower and run with longer strides so they ar covering more gorund, that helps them get the idea. i try not to click in the ring as she puts an ear back and looks at me instead of stirding out, but it works for teaching them.

Work in hand over trotting poles and gradually extend the distance of them to give you your length of stride. It has the added benefit of encouraging the horse to round up nicely and look where they are putting their feet.

we get our arabians to do it loose in the field and then give the command of 'show off'. if you work with your horse alot from the floor you should see him trying to copy what you do with your body. we can get ours to extend and bounce trough doing it ourselves.

the other thing to think about is that if your boy is running through a canter aid he is highlt unlikely to be giving a true extended trot as it will be too fast. the tempo should lengthen but not speed up.
