Question in title....is there any difference...I know the Rugby pelham has an extra ring but does this change the action in the bit at all??
Thanks :)

I think it's to get them used to a double bridle before you actually start to use one or it has the same effect.

The floating ring is used with a sliphead to give the illusion that the horse is wearing a double bridle. No pelham can even begin to give the same precise effect that a double gives, simply because the effect of the bridoon and curb bits are combined into one mouthpiece, and therefore the action of each is dulled and compromised. I think rugby pelhams are most commonly seen in the show ring, where riders want the illusion of a double bridle without having the two mouthpieces, maybe because either they or the horse has not been trained to ride in a double.
