hiya,
As a teenager I rode a 14hh welsh/arab... but he had a very dipped back and high withers and I always felt as if I was a bit big on him - not weight -wise, just in height. I think knowing that has made me think, right.. in looking for horse it must be at least 14.2hh. Im 5ft3 and weigh just under 8stone..... I want something that will gove me confidence and will live out. Hubby says "not this year" but Ive seen an ad for a 14hh cob type piebald gelding:o :o :o .............

hi swiftly
i am the same height as you and weigh 9 stone and i often ride my son-s 13.2 sec b x. i-m sure a 14 hh cobby type will be fine for you - take a look at the pics of adults who ride ponies and i-m sure it will put your mind at rest.

Pa,,14.2hands, is a giant horse!
I rode a 12.3, 13.2 and a 13.3 hand ones.
So no, 14.2 is not to small by my standards!:D

I'm 5ft7 and not and significantly heavier than you! My haflingers are 13.3hh and 14.1hh and don't bat an eyelid at me on them!

I think Im realising build has a lot to do with it.... the pony I had as a teenager was very finely built, and as I said, had high withers and a dippy back. Hence I felt 'big' on him. Also, I asked to ride something about 14.2hh at a riding school and here is a pic of me on the pony I rode...
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n202/fuzzysmum/Indy.jpg
again, I felt too big on him, but looking at the pic he is very narrow and I felt as if there wasnt much under me! As I said before, I have been riding a friend's highland (14.2hh) and have also ridden alot of other native types and felt more comfy on them... perhaps becaus there is 'more to them' ?:D
Here is a pic of the piebald that is for sale that I like... he is 14hh (not me riding him)

Certainly not too small! I am 5'6" and quite a bit heavier than you, and I ride a 14.1hh Welsh D who I think is a nice size!
Have posted this pic recently on another thread, but I think it shows nicely how much he takes up my leg (bearing in mind he takes it up even more so now as he has expanded considerably at the smell of the spring grass!:o )

hi sarah,
he looks lovely, and you look great on him. In the pic above of me on the school horse, my feet hang under his belly and he was 14.2hh, but the more I think about it, Im sure his narrow build had a lot to do with it.
The piebald cob is sold :(........... however there is now a 14.2hh haflinger (!!:D ) gelding,7 years old, confidence giver, ideal 1st pony. £3750. Is that quite a lot???

I think build has everything to do whether you feel comfortable on a horse.
I have a 14hh and a 14.3, the 14hh is a welsh cob, the 14.3 is a welsh cob x, my 14.3 is way wider than my 14hh (his nickname 'chubbs' says it all:D ) and i feel alot better on him than my 14hh (not that im big on either of them)

Why do people keep asking these questions  At your height and weight you can ride a lot smaller than 14hh. I am 5'5" and 9 stone, and ride a 12.2hh Exmoor (who is built like a tank though :D ) and regularly ride a 13.2hh Sec A x Arab. I am the odd one out around here - most people smaller than me ride big hunters, but I am the one having the most fun :) Ali xx

Have to admit..am always more happy on a nice wide pony!
Even I don't feel safe on those super narrow ones.

If I was your height and weight I would be riding 12hh ponies.
im 9st and 5ft6 with long legs and ride a 12.2hh exmoor who is actually not built like a tank. I also ride a couple of 14hh Fjords and have a 14.1hh Highland. She takes up my leg really well, and only when riding bareback do my legs stick out underneath her belly. Actually thinking about it, she takes up my leg better than the 15.2hh TB and even the 16.2hh TBx Shire I used to ride.
I love ponies though and even my 'big' horse Tarquin is a massive 15.1hh!

I know what you mean . . . sometimes i wonder if it's the "you're very thin!" reassurance that some people are looking for . . . :D

well, because people like me are new to the forum, and have been out of the horsy world for a while. Also, personally, looking for some reassurance as I was a bit worried I looked daft in the pics I posted. Sorry if the repetetive theme annoys some people, but it's bound to happen:D ..........and my weight has nothing to do with it, I was asking because I felt my legs hung quite low on some of the ponies I've ridden, despite not being very tall. If you find such questions irritating, why bother to read the thread?

@ Swiftly, As a very grown up  adult of 5'5" with a 13.1 exmoor pone, i know how you feel.
You are looking for reassurance from other who ride ponies because of the fashionable misconseption that adults or anyone over the age of 13years, for that matter, has to be on a 'Horse'
I have found myself saying things like, "we only do endurance" and then enjoyed the look on their faces:) If you ride a pone, you will always get people who think you should be on a horse.
I hope that you have had enough positive responses from this forum, to give you the confidence to do what you want. :D :D X

I'm sure you've seen the thread on this showing pictures of adults riding their ponies and people are all different heights and weight.
No a nice 14hh pony would be ideal!
Must admit I feel much happier now I have a 14hh, previously had a 15.3 cob that was just to big for me.
Your friend's Highland is lovely! The riding school pony is also sweet and you don't look out of sorts on him either!

lol, my OH took it the very first time I went out on her. She looks good in it eh? (she always looks pretty tho)
Re Indy, I'll give you 'must not break pony!' that pony darned near broke me, dipping his shoulder at a flat out gallop!!:D With no solid native 'bulk' infront of the saddle there was just a sheer drop, and drop I did!
