Well, for those of you who can't remember or don't know, we had to call the vet out in December for Red. (One and only time during the 9 years J has owned him, has she had to get the vet out.) Turned out he had a rather sore 'manly area', and was having trouble peeing because his sheath was 'dirty'.
This makes me sound like such a bad mum, because I have never cleaned it before. :o On a yard of 10 geldings, all of them seem to 'clean themselves' so to say, and she has never had a problem with Red's 'sheath area' during the 9 years of ownership.
When vet came, she sedated him and thoroughly cleaned him, put him on a 72hrs dose of bute and he was "peeing like a horse" again, (excuse the pun  ) within days. Now, when I went down this morning and walked up the corridor to make the feeds ready, Red did his usual 'pee when mum arrives' jobby, but I turned round and saw him pawing at the ground, and shaking his head, not sure whether it was in anger or pain or what. Also, "it" wasn't hanging out fully, would this be a sign of soreness so he would be reluctant to "let it all hang out"?
From what I can tell with his bed (deep litter shavings), he still has a substantional amount of wee in his bed, but i'm really worried that my little man is in pain again :(
He's really picky about when he wees and when he gets it out. Will seldom wee around people, never when riding especially. Erm..so I have not had any opportunites to clean or attempt to clean or just see what's going on up there. I will make a point to 'hide' and watch him tomorrow morning, to see whether it was just me catching the wrong moment this morning.
Could it be that if what I'm seeing is right, that it would be best to ring a vet to sedate and clean him?? Or are there ways for me to "get it out" to clean myself (which i'm not bothered about tbh).
One thing after another lately :( Poor wee man. xxx
