Havent mentioned this after all the fuss when i had Ebony on trial :o but Hattie has what appear to be sarcoids. Difference is that she only has three potential ones and they are not anywhere near her girth area. Considering i only have hattie for pleasure not competing and on the basis of very lond conversations i had with my vet when i was making decisions about Ebony i decided that her other qualities outweighed this problem. She has a nodular lump on her flank, what looks like a wart on the tip of one ear and a rough scaly patch in the corner of her mouth - this one concerned me most as i thought the bit might irritate it but apparently not. My vets opinions on Sarcoids are to leave well alone unless treatment becomes necessary due to the risk of making them worse not better. But i was wondering whether it was worth giving her a supplement in her dinner to help or something. What have other people tried and how successful was it??

Hi when my girl had two small sarcoids one on her chest on one on her tummy, they were hard so not the relly bad sarcoids some horses can get,we tried global herbs sarcex, its a supp that goes in the feed it takes a few months but its really good stuff, after 6 months of using this the sarcoid on her tummy dropped off,i think you can only use it for 12 months before you have to have a break.go on the global herbs web site for more info.
Good luck and let me know how you get on.

Although some horses wont eat this...it STINKS. This was the problem i had with Alex. And they have it available in a cream. It says to apply 2-3 times daily...I applied it once every few days for about a month and wallah! It was gone, hair has grown back etc and there is no sign of a return :D
I dont know if tack shops near you sell Global herbs...if you click the link in my sig. And call the shop, they have it and will happily post it, although its not actually on the website at the moment :)

Lilys was under her girth and I had to have the vet nitro it twice, it took ages to heal :o
If she ever has anymore that are not in an area that will rub, I will leave them well alone

Jake had one on the inside of his leg, the grey warty type, about 1.1/2" in diameter. I applied Thuja cream and within a couple of months it had totally gone and hasn't re-appeared since.

My stepmum's horse has had sarcoids for about 15 years and sucessive vets have given us the same advice as yours. His seem to grow and grop off although he always has some. We've never tried any supplements but I have heard of people rubbing instant coffee on. I've never tried it on sarcoids but have used it on proud flesh that defied all other treatment and it was very effective.

Luka had them round her eye and we left them alone as long as we could but then they got so big she could have lost her eye so we had BCJ treatment. Quite extreme and distressing to watch your horse have the treatment though, definatly worth it though as they have nearly all gone now *touches wood* That was the only treatment open to us though due to the location of them.

I have them froze off by the vet, which usually leaves it baldy or causes white hair to grow back... if they are very small I can do it myself with an over the counter Wart Remover that you apply to a Q-tip and then hold on it for a minute to freeze it. I had one come up on a horse that was irritated by pad and quickly rebelled by growing the size of a thumb in no time. The vet injected it several times with a combination of two meds. He had to come back once more two weeks later and inject a little bit more but it caused it to eventually fall off without any scarring.

the one near her mouth has fallen off so was obviously a scab not a sarcoid so that leaves two. I'll leave them well alone unless they start to get irritated or change. Thenks for all the info :)

I've successfully used:
Global Herbs Sarc-Ex and Restore (took about 6 weeks)
Simple Systems Eclipse Recovery (they don't sell it for sarcoids but I had a hunch and tried it!). I used thuja ointment topically on the sarcoid at the same time. I'd used thuja on its own without any success, added the Eclipse Recovery and it fell off in a month.
I've also heard good reports about propolis being good for sarcoids.
I initially used the Liverpool treatment from the vets which didn't work, if anything the sarcoid got more 'healthy' ... not what I wanted to happen. An expensive waste of time though I'm sure that it does work for some horses.

i haven't used liverpool cream myself but i haven't any bad reports of it. jerry is very prone to sarcoids which i get banded by the vet and he has also had the popolous(its pop something, cant remember:o ) virus and for this i bought an over the counter cream. the warts got this "healthy" look about them and i though they were getting worse so i called the vet who said that they get angry like this and then die. so i wouldnt worry about warts that you are treating getting worse as this would suggest the treatment is working.

It wasn't bad (apart from being cytotoxic) but it just didn't work even after the sarcoid looked more healthy. It just got more healthy looking and grew. I wasn't worried, just not impressed.
It wouldn't be my first option especially as more gentle approaches HAVE worked.

My Sarc-ex supplement and cream arrive on Monday, and I'm going to try this route for a while:).
My question is though - if this is successful, and the sarcoids go, do I then have to keep feeding it? If not, does it prevent reoccurance or might he get more and need to go back on it?

Thought I'd revive this thread for a quick update.
My Sarc-ex supplement and cream arrived on 23rd May, and I've been using both every day since. I've seen a real change in his sarcoids already.
The flat scaly one (sure there's a proper name, but I can think of it!) between his front legs is looking quite lumpy and appears to cover less surface area. The nodular one on his sheath which stuck out a good centimetre has pretty much flattened (to less than 5mm anyway), and looks quite scab like - was smooth. The other nodular one has really started to shrink down.
He then had about 9 or 10 other possible sarcoids on his sheath, all of which came up in March this year while I was on holiday and the biting midges were around. These might not be, but given he's prone to them, and the 'fly bites' haven't gone down in 2 months and the fact that sarcoids are linked to fly bites, I'm guessing they were on their way to becoming sarcoids:rolleyes: Well, they've really settled down. They look less prominent and the skin is less irritated looking.
I'm very surprosed to see anything yet - the 2 main ones on his sheath and the one between his legs have been there for a couple of years, and never change shape. So to see them shrinking already is really promising....:)
Will update again....

My horse had a sarcoid on his head just below his ear when i bought him as a yearling, it was quite big and bled a lot, the vet surgically removed it (only took 5mins with a scalpel). He is now 5 and it has never come back, there is a slight 1cm scar but you have to look hard to find it. Much easier than messing about with creams!

Had the liverpool cream applied to JOy about 3 weeks ago and no change in the sarcoid. I'm waiting for the vet to call me back for a chat.
Her sarcoid is a varacoid one.

Good deal then...you'll have to keep us posted and let us know if it continues to work.
