Summer Turnout Rugs

Does anyone have any recommendations for a very light turnout rug. My share horse's owner doesn't want him out in the rain without a rug but he gets really hot and is currently wearing a winter turnout.
I was thinking maybe a Bucas Sun Shower as if the sun comes out it will reflect that back but is also waterproof. http://www.bucas.com/index.php/products/C178/
It needs to be fairly tough as field hobbies include vigorous rolling, galloping round and getting into fights.

we have a Mark Todd lightweight. It's like a kagool, i.e protects from the wind and rain, but is very light. It has been tough too... mine is a thug!

I recommend a saxon extra light turnout. I have one and it is basically a waterproof outer and it was only £25.

It's Ok to leave on all the time and even on those days when your at work and you've left the rug on as it was raining in the morning and then the sun comes out and its scorching.

I also like how he hasnt been able to destroy it as he is a bit of a rug wrecker!!!

i have the shires typhoon rug. its been good. my horse took off while i was putting it on :o and it was like a batman cape (only one bit done up at the front) and he eventually got it over his head and off (i thought he was going to break his neck :eek: ) after treading on it several times, the buckle that was done up only slightly came away and my mum fixed that but under that sort of stress it didn't do much at all!
i really like the way it does up at the front too. it has the conventional buckle but also has hooks (like you see on leg straps) which means that you can quickly do the rug up (at the front :rolleyes: ) both of my horses have one and i like them. they also have a reflective strip on the tail flap and cross sercingles, the tail flap is also large :)

i had a bucas rain rug, not the silver/white reflective one, the blue smartex and i hated it! i don't know if they've changed but mine had a FLEECE lining (why would they want fleece on a warm day?) which the hairs cling to and keep the horse warmer, there wasn't a tail flap and there were no leg straps provided which meant my mare's rear end got wetter than with other rugs, it has no gusset which limited her movement and the material seemed very odd... anyway, that is just my opinion... they may have changed the design and there may be people that love them but i don't.
I had a masta rain rug too at one point but it shrunk in the wash, other than that it was alright. (it only shrunk the first time it was washed, then it remained at the new length, shorter than the original but it didn't shrink further with more washes)

I have a Weatherbeeta Orican, and love it. It's of a higher denier than the Landa's, meaning it's slightly more indestructable. ;)

When I can afford it I'll be buying another, assuming they're still available.

As we stand at the moment though, Daffy just gets a wet fly rug.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Coss I don't think the bucas one I saw has a fleece lining but special material to keep them cool however looking at the picture as you said no leg straps just a filet string so might not stay in place.
The typhoon looks nice and the mark todd though that's pricey. I saw the saxon one but was put off by it being so reasonable but sounds like it's good value for money.
Got to go look up the others now.

go onto eBay. I got my Mark Todd there and as I remember, it was quite reasonable.

I had the Mark Todd one,I sold though because I never used it and thats not because it was'nt good!
It was a great cover,Chunky never got sweaty under it and he was out all day in the drizzle in it and he stayed dry.
They are abit expensive but really worth it :)

I bought two bucas sunshine/shower rugs a couple of years ago. They are brilliant, so light compared to any other lightweight rug. The horses I wanted them for were heavy set horses and therefore there wasn't enough room in the neck (malachy needs the Rambo Excel, ordinary rugs don't fit him )
I phoned Bucas to explain the problem and asked if they could suggest a L/W chest expander, they offered to make them out of the same material especially. Couple of days later, they arrived in the post, free of charge !
Now thats what I call service, I was really impressed.
That aside, if you just want to keep your horse clean and dry on warm days, its definitely the best I've tried.

I have a bucas sun shower turnout (my bargain buy - only £4 from the local tack store as it had two tiny tears in the lining), very lightweight with a mesh lining. Haven't used it much yet, but the few times Flyer has worn it he has stayed dry and comfortable.

It can be tricky with sharing if the owner is adamant about something. Don't want to get into a discussion on a public forum in case it gets back but I would tend to your opinion.

Julia - the posh monsieur fancies himself very much the boy about town in the field and has a 'reputation' shall we say. When they all went out to the summer fields there were several limping bleeding geegees who came in that first week. And he tells me mud is good for the complexion.

I've had three l/w Amigo rugs, and they've all leaked big time. :mad:

Currently using the l/w Premier Equine rugs at £39.99 and they've kept him dry in the heaviest of downpours. I also like the l/w Horseware Rhinos, but he left his last one hanging in pieces around the field.

Our pair have grey Amigo's - they're reallylightweight and ideal for summer. Also have a Weatherbeeta one which is light and good for summer.

@ crisO: so he is some sort of brutish metrosexual, one who likes to pamper himself (the mudwraps ...) but also makes sure everyone else knows who rules the roost! the fact he is also into recylcing bins confirms my suspicions :D

Notpoodle I think you have him sussed. A metrosexual thug. Wonder what that is in french. He not only enjoys the mudwraps but also the long grooming sessions that he gets after.
