wasn't sure which section to put this in.

Over the passed couple of years i've been working on getting my mare to relax down on a contact as she used to work on the buckle but very hollow so i'm trying to keep her fit and healthy and get her working more efficiently.

Most of the time she is more relaxed now and has started to soften over her topline and accept the bit sometimes. When she does soften over her topline and accept the bit she does salivate a lot. She has a very soft mouth and i have her in the softest dressage legal bit i could think of: a loose ring happy mouth bit (there was a big difference when she went from a thick loose ring jointed snaffle to this bit).
she does look as if she has lipstick on for the amount of froth she has - so she's not dripping but does have a moist mouth ;). This is great when she's working long and low but if something happens (eg. a trip, the cows start jumping about [in a separate but nearby field] etc)
she goes back to a tense busy mare and the head pops up. The problem is when her head comes up, its sudden and i can usually see her nose through her ears (as thats how high her head goes) and then a couple of strides later she's coughing a spluttering.

Is this the same as a human swallowing a breathing at the same time? it really does seem to be as if the excess saliva is suddenly hitting the back of her throat and she starts coughing.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Sorry, can't say I have... sounds rather extreme, especially if as you say she just has a nice wet mouth rather than anything else. Neither of mine have ever done anything similar.

Kia has choked on his own saliva but it isnt constan or repetitive.

I cant think pf anything to suggest on how to stop it tho sorry!!!

so my horse is strange then! i do think it is the suddeness of her head coming up, as it is only when she's been gobbing on the bit more and then throws her head up that she'll have a bit of a cough then go back to normal. she never seems stressed though, i suppose its a bit like if you are drinking water and you don't swallow quick enough (or is that just me that has done that:o)
