Got the email this afternoon - he is absolutely beautiful! :D
Why not silver... basically because silver does not exist in Welsh ponies... ;)
ambatt - remember the email I sent saying I might have found someone with a silver dapple Welsh? Well, this is he... every pic I've seen of him from the beginning to now looks like silver dapple.
I have samples of his mane to send off for testing but hospital stays got in the way. I will definately get that sorted now; if he's not silver he's the most convincing mimic I've ever seen. :D Exciting stuff!

The mane and tail colour does not look quite right for Silver dapple, too grey toned - and the body coat does not seem 'brown' enough for classic silver dapple colouration (think Nott!).
I would be very surprised if it did turn out to be silver dapple - what colour were his parents?
Can I stick my neck out and say sooty/countershaded palomino??
Are you sending the samples to avianbiotech - they are pretty quick I understand.
Just a thought - I have NEVER seen silver dapple in conjunction with sabino markings in Icelandics although I have seen silver dapple pintos.
Whatever he turns out to be, he is the most stunning looking little pone I have seen in a long time. Beautiful.

hi ambatt ...
his sire is chestnut who's both parents are chestnut .... and in the next generation he's got bay/chestnut/black/cream
his dam is bay .... both parents are also bay
It doesn't show so much on the pics , but his legs are extremely chocolately brown , as is his coat ... will take some outside ones which will show him off better ...
thank you for your nice comments on him anyway :)
chev
21st May 2007, 06:29 PM
It's his parents' colours that really confuse the issue. I'd have said sooty palomino, but neither parent carries cream. The chestnut parent *could* hide silver dapple; there's no way they could hide cream.
I will be sending samples to avionbiotech; and testing him for cream and silver.

Poor little chap is "colourless" ....
could i also test his chestnut brother chev ...??
although i know it wont be visible on him , it would tell me if he carries the gene ... wont it
ambatt
21st May 2007, 09:45 PM
Are his parents bright chestnut or liver?
Chev, remember the many discussions we had on liver as a separate colour with variable patterning and inheritance?? Wonder if it fitted this little chap?
He does have the countershaded face that occurs in some silver dapples though, but it could equally be countershading.
Really interested in seeing the results of the DNA.
The only other possibility is the 'mushroom' colouration that appears to act on red pigment and not black like the Z locus for silver dapple. I am sure I read somewhere that Sponberg has a theory for the mushrooms now.
If he does turn out to be silver dapple, he will be worth a Kings Ranson and every US Welshie breeder will be beating a path to your door Poisondizzy!

Hi Ambatt
His father is quite a dark chestnut , he also sired a palomino in the same year out of a cremello mare , who has changed colour no end ... and i also have a chestnut brother , which i now know will not show signs of "silver" but may carry it if proven ... still learning this genetics thingy LOL ....
never heard of the "mushroom" though .. will have to look that one up ;) , the mother is bay with dapples .. whether thats any help or not i dont know ...
poor chev ... bet she wishes she never knew me

Well, he has got the pale eyelashes that usually go with silver dapple I grant you! There is still something 'not right' about his mane and tail colour though, I see he is the sabino gene clearly. I do wonder if it is something to do with the effect of the sabino gene on liver chestnut plus some countershading from his bay dam.
Will sit here and bite my nails until Chev gets the DNA results!
BTW He has the most beautiful eyes I have ever seen on a horse, what an irrestible boy.
* dapples on bay/chestnut/non-grey are usually to do with nutrition and don't have a bearing on dapple colouration at a genetic level.

I don't suppose you have any teeny tiny foal photos of him do you? Silver dapple foals are a distinctive colour when born.

In his foal photo there looks to be a definite reddish tinge to his coat, he is not the uniform beigy colour silver dapples are generally born.

I have just had a look at potential colouration for your chap going on the known colour gentics of his parents:
If daddy is just plain ordinary chestnut;
58.34% - Bay
33.33% - Chestnut
8.33% - Black
If daddy is chestnut but hiding the silver gene (is heterozygous for silver)
33.33% - Chestnut
29.17% - Silver Bay
29.17% - Bay
4.17% - Silver Black
4.17% - Black
If daddy is chestnut hiding silver (is homozygous for silver)
58.34% - Silver Bay
33.33% - Chestnut
8.33% - Silver Black
All cases are on basis of bay dam.
silver black = silver dapple

Looks to fit in with the mushroom dilution inheritance pattern to me and the colour seems to 'fit' more, which if this is the case makes your boy doubly interesting!

23rd May 2007, 07:16 AM
Ambatt .... i was told by his breeders that he was actually born a palomino colouring , very similar to that of the foal pic you have posted , i will ask them if they have one , it may put a different perspective on all of this ...
You must have worked hard sorting all that out ,...
i dont know how you do it ...
if chev can teach you that well ... there's hope for me yet .. ;)
the shetties look gorgeous .... thank you for the link ...

Silver dapple foals are a sort of creamy beige that is not like palomino, but as colour is such a subjective thing, and his breeders not knowing what silver dapple is and how it manifests, Bob could be anything! There is a diagnostic check that is used in Iceland but can only be done on the newborn foal, that checks if a foal is red or black based.
Need those test results!

There is a Welsh B mare who is almost identical in colour to Bob - and she is sooty palomino. (Cremello daddy, dark bay mum).
Had it not been for Bob's lack of cream dilute parent, I would have had him down as sooty palomino, no question.

Chev, I think we have come to the conclusion , from the wonderful information supplied through this thread (very interesting indeed) that young
"Snoggin the Snog" is a black buckskin, he ticks all the boxes from that buckskin page, right down to the cream ear hair.
Is it possible that he will keep his blue eyes? His little eyes were very blue when he was born, they have changed a bit, but they are still blueish. deffo not brown, but not saphire blue like Charles Buttons esq.

Just seen this as I'm a new member;) What a gorgeous pony! Stunning!
As for colour...very interesting and I'm no expert so I couldn't judge.
But to put my two pennies worth in...I thought that 'Silver dapple' was a bit of a strange misnomer because these horses are rarely dappled. I'm sure I read that somewhere...
Your Bob reminds me of the 'chocolate' colouring typical of Rocky Mountain Horses whcih I think is classed as chestnut:

Sorry if someone's already posted something similar - have read thread quickly but avidly as am at work:o

Silver dapple is designated on the z locus - it only alters black diluting it to the classic colouration designated as silver dapple. Although you are correct in assuming horses do not have to be dappled to be silver dapple in colour, and it is indeed somewhat of a misnomer. Silver dapple can by hidden by chestnut as it has no effect on red pigment.
Silver dapple is also known as 'taffy' and other variants but all are the effects of the dilute z on a black base coat.

We have the results of Bob's tests...
He tested negative for cream (which I expected - neither parent is cream).
And for silver dapple (Z gene) - he tested positive :D :D :D He is heterozygous for silver; since Bob's mum is bay (and therefore obviously doesn't have silver, else she'd be silver bay) it must have come from his sire. His sire being chestnut meant the silver gene was hidden, because it has no effect on red pigment, only black.
Bob is Ee aa crcr Zz (one black one red allele, no agouti, no cream, one silver).

Oh wow!!! Thats great (though he would be gorgeous whatever his colour was called). Two questions, one how did her get silver dapple, if it doesnt technically exist in Welshies, and 2, what does the future hold for Bob?

It's not been confirmed in UK bred Welshies before. There are two main possibilities as to why not; the first is that this is a mutation, the second is that silver in Welsh has been hidden. Section Bs, for example, have a lot of chestnut ponies and relatively fewer black. So silver dapple could well be hiding in the many chestnut ponies around; and because silver on bay gives you a colour that is easily mistaken for flaxen chestnut, it's not at all easy to spot potential silver ponies. Black is not that common a colour in As and Bs relatively speaking, and it's the one colour that shows silver obviously.
