View Full Version : Photos of adults on ponies

After reading about how self concious people get about riding ponies as an adult I though it would be a great confidence boost for us all to put photos of ourselves up riding our ponies. Perhaps we could put the hight of the pony, our own height and weight (if you are happy to) then perhaps people will look and see what us lot are doing and will boost everyone elses confidence. I don't have one of my pony yet as I' going to back her in a few weeks time but shall post one soon as. If it takes off perhaps it would be a good idea to put it as a sticky so it's always there for us to look back on when we need a confidence boost :D

Well there's a story behind that. I bought her as 14.2.....I measured her as 14.1...then someone had the height measuring stick out and she measured in at 13.3. Another horse was measured and then height life measured a few weeks later and came in at 0.1 smaller than our stick, so technically she COULD be 13.2. I am confident the stick is ok as another horse was measured at his definate height with the stick.
Bearing in mind that Bry has had her shoes taken off during these process's.
Wally....I like Bryony to, she's a character alright and one in a million.

You know, before this thread I didnt think It possible I would be able to ride a 12.2. I am 5ft 2 and about 9 stone. If you would have said heres a 12.2 to ride I would have laughed and said very funny! I think we are bought up thinking we have to have a 15/16hh horse as adults. Thank goodness for this thread! I'll certainly be buying a pony (perhaps not 12.2 though :p though I know it would be possible now!)

here i am on Dougal. He is about 14hh but very slightly built width-ways, i am about 5ft 11 and was 8 1/2 stone at the time of this picture.
At the riding school I exercise everything form 13hh upwards! None of them seem to have any trouble with me, although I do feel a lot more at home on a tall thoroughbred!

Glad it's helped you and I'm glad there are some tall riders out there who ride the smaller ones. I shall be riding my filly who is to make 14.2 - 14.3hh when she's backed. My friend who is 5ft and around 8 1/2 stone will be riding my welsh a's and b's. I shall get some photos :)

I had a wonderful 13.3hh pony, and older members of NR will remember how we did everything together. Once I became over age, I refused to sell and just stopped competing! I had such an amazing partnership with my pony, Maverick up until he lost his life in January.

Now I have a new pony, Missi. She's only 4 and was an unwanted pony my sister picked up for me. At 14hh, she has an inch on Maverick, but being finer, she feels a lot smaller. Doesn't stop us having fun. She's a very different ride to Maverick as she has so much speed!

I went and did a little local dressage walk-trot thing this evening. Me at 5ft4 and 12 and a half stone...riding a 13.2hh against lots of women (similar builds) riding 16.2hh hunter things! Ok so me and her didn't get placed..but thats cause we raced around the arena at a million miles per hour! She was definatley much quicker than every horse there!
Have PM'd you also :D

i read that link and its very interesting. i shouldnt have to defend myself but i will!! nelly was broken to harness at 2yrs old ,well before i got him!!! he had also been sat on 2/3 times before i got him.ive had him a year in august,i cant have sat on him more than 10 times. i mainly show him in hand, he is only walking and trotting whilst ridden and has only cantered on the lunge twice,i have owned horses for 30yrs and qualified as a bhsai in 1992,so im not an un-knowledgable person, this was a thread about adults feeling self-concious about owning/riding ponies,i didnt expect to be criticised for riding MY horse!!!!! he is being done at his rate and very slowly and is showing no signs of being un-happy,he is worked for approx 8/10 mins on the lunge twice a week and ridden once/twice a week for a max of 15mins at a time,he has had 5 weeks off recently due to a thorn being in his leg and all of the winter off,so its not as if he is worked like a dog continuously,i have the sweetest, kindest, most loveing horse i know and there is no-way on this planet i will do anything to ruin that!!!

Laura & phantom - Thanks I have worked hard on him (sometimes harder than him!) I have him in a Collegiate Convertable all purpose saddle at the moment. You wouldnt believe it but its a 17.5" and has the wintec changable gullets. He's currently in a med/wide gullet, but the chestnut roan was in a wide gullet. Its leather so looks nice and is really easy to care for. Gets a clean once a month if lucky! Because its been so good and fitted all three ponies in those pics I bought a 16.5" too which I last night fitted to our welsh d driving cob in a wide gullet & fitted a treat! Both bought second hand for about £350:)

No pics but I have a 13hh part bred welsh pony that I want a loaner for - I have ridden her myself but think I am too heavy at 12stone for her - she did not seem very happy so would like a light weight rider to hack her and perhaps try and sort out her issues with being ridden in an enclosed space she could stay at our yard or perhaps be moved locally so that I can keep an eye on her - at the moment she is with friends who actually own her now but would like me to take her with me when I move my other ponies - seems a shame to leave her standing in the field - so if you live in North Devon pm me.

Hi, I haven't been in this part of the boards before so I thought I'd have a look, and stumbled across all these lovely pictures! I just wanted to say how much of a confidence boost they are, as I have been getting so much stick from people for riding my 12hh Welsh Sec. A. It's not just like banter between friends, people who I've never met before have come up to me and said things that are downright rude! I'm 5ft 1" and 8 and a half stone, and he's more than happy to take my weight... And yet people still come up to me and have a go, or say things behind my back, you'd think I was torturing the poor pony the way they go on! Its a real confidence knock when you've just won a showjumping class, then someone you've never met before comes up and tells you, rudely, that you're too big for your own pony! :( Oh well, these pictures are inspiring and show me that I should just ignore these silly immature people who have nothing better to do than insult me and my pony! Good on you all, your ponies are all lovely :)
ps. Sorry for the mega long post  ETA ...And I'm not quite sure how that odd title got there! Oh well!

Well I am an older rider..........49yrs old, about 5'6" and I ride ponies and LOVE it. My daughter is an adult, nearly 21yrs old and 5' 1/2" and about 52kgs and she rides ponies but is also the foreman for a racing stable.:)
Gov rides our gorgeous Buddy for jumping and the very FIRST jumping comp he went in he WON! Thanks to Gov:)

Well looks like you will have to click on them to see them better, have not worked out how to post the good sized ones, mine are coming up as thumbnails.
Anyway, the woman looking constipated is me riding my 13.3hh who was not really paying a lot of attention at that time:p
The girl in the singlet top on the bay is my daughter working Buddy in the arena.
The jumping pic is Gov on Buddy at a comp at W/b.

I LOVE posts like this!! You all look great on your ponies and they are so much fun to ride. I thought I'd share a few photos with you all of me on mine and my mums pony called Warrior. I compete on Warrior at mounted games and have an amazing amount of fun!! BTW Warrior is 13hh and a Welsh Section C and I'm 5'8 and now weigh 11stone 4pound. Hi, I don't want to be rude, but that pelham is on upside-down and will be very uncomfortable for Cassie. The small loop (currently at the bottom) should be at the top attached to the cheekpiece, and there should then either be a rounding connecting the other two rings, or you should have two reins. There should also be a curb chain connecting the two cheekpiece rings, which I think can be seen dangling down the other side.
I hope I haven't caused offence, I have seen many people make this mistake!

I agree. I used to compete BHTA on my then mostly thoroughbreds, I did enjoy it but this is a whole new experience:D:D
On my pone I now hunt (trail now) and boy does she keep up.
TREC, only done two but very please with her attitude and we have had very good points.
Endurance, only done up to 17 k at the moment as she is only six so will do longer distances next year.
Dressage from time to time and have been placed.
We recently came back from riding 60 miles around part of the pennine way in four days. Mountainous terrain, rocky and very hard work but great fun.
and ofcourse the best of all, hacking, safe fun and comfy :D

I love all these photos - all beautiful. Not many shown on really small horses though...so take a look at this! This is my Shetland (9.2 hands). I am 5'3" and 110 lbs. She always seems delighted to go trekking although our treks consist of me getting off and walking or jogging along side of her about 50% of the time so as not to overtire her. Good exercise!29676

Just remember a story of me being laughed at on a pony! I used to work at a racing yard in Newmarket (14 years ago now)! Anyway at the time I was the smallest and lightest so got the job of exercising the yard's shetland! Picture this me on a grey shetland pony walking alongside the gallops on Newmarket heath as race horses thunder past! Will never forget it, sadly no pics! Yes, that is my exmoor:D love her to bits, only down side to her size when riding with hounds is if there is a big jump, but fortunatly where we are its mainly big ditches and she is sooooo clever with them and the hedges always have an exmoor size gap, if not we make one as we go through!:D

P.s the miracle cure for mites if the dog flea spray 'front line' it works wonders
but you will also have to fumigate the stable.

Ponymad25 - I'll take some more of you on Pim at the weekend, get some up to date ones!
This is me on one of our 3 work horses ( I teach Deaf Blind adults to ride), I'm 5'7 and he's a 14.2hh Con X. Not a good pic, it was taken a year ago when we just got him, he has muscled up and is now gorgeous! Plus I've lost a stone and a half since then. Ride him most days and its great fun, such a change from riding my big girl at home who's 16.3!

I have seen a few large guys on smallish horses before and the horses coped fine, it's the way you ride that makes the difference.:) At least that is what I have found so far....

I'm BRAND spanking new here
and ive been mesmorised looking at all these lovely ponies
when im suppost to be doing history coursework :p
but its quite addictive!
Well im not an adult, im only 15, but i guess im adult size
and i ALWAYS ride ponies at my yard (not fortunate enough to have my own)
and i have to say i love it! much prefer a pony over a big horse!
This is me riding Dandy a 13.1hh pony, who can be a complete nightmare, as his favourite passtime is pulling his head down at canter and watching his rider be flung over and land at his feet.
I rode him on saturday; a little girl was complaining that he was being a pain and couldnt even get him to trot, so i jumped on and he was a complete angel!! My riding instructor said he was having a bad day, but he was loving it :) Im 5ft 7. 10 1/2 st.
Sorry i dont know how to get the pic bigger, its adorable, i promise though!

i'd love to do the xc at my yard on him
but i don't think i will somehow lol
ive ridden a 12.2hh ONCE and it actually didn't feel much smaller than dandy
i would love to ride the smaller ones

I WANT MY OWN PONYYYYYYYYY :(!!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously, ponies are so underrated in the equestrian world! Trouble is my RS seem to feel that because I'm tall, i should ride horses  i haven't ridden a pony in 6 MONTHS!!! It's not a slight on horses, but i really want to get on a pony again! If i'm able to (finally) buy this year i'm not going over 14.3hh :D

This is Buddy-boo my new 14.2hh pony who belongs to my nephew's wife. I am riding him for free in return for grooming/helping out favours.
I am riding a 15.2hh cob mare at the moment but she is going to be sold at some point. Buddy is sweet but a bit spooky, so am going to give him lots of inhand walkies and introduce him to strange paper bags that blow about in the wind, mounting blocks (wouldn't stand still for me to mount cos the block was new) and all those sorts of scary things :0))
I like him and I think we can become good friends:

Thanks, I certainly landed on my feet when i was offered him! :) I wasn't even looking! He's a great boy and we are bonding well. :) He's had over a year off so lacks muscle and as you can see i'm a big girl, so we are taking things slowly and getting fit together. I've had about 7 months out of the saddle myself so we are well matched at the moment. :)

This is me on my 12.2 Exmoor gelding. I've had him for 4 weeks now.
I'm 5'6 and 9 stone, but I find him really comfortable to ride and he's a lot of fun. He takes up my leg better than a lot of 'taller' ponies as he is so wide!

he's gorgeous and you look fab together, love exmoors (after little daughter and my trekking session on them) the exmoor I went on was 12.2 and I am much heavier than you and shorter so must have looked like the fat fairy on top of a birthday cake LOL
