Hi there,

I have a round flat backed heavy weight cob. I bought a brand new saddle for him recently (and have had the saddle out to re-flock etc a couple of times already). The problem with it is that it is always slipping to the left and is putting me off balance in the saddle. My saddler advised to have the thinest possible saddle cloth under it and that I would always have some slippage because of his type. Can anyone recommend a good anti-slip saddle cloth (I have already tried the Limpet). :D

Many thanks :)

Nooo you dont want to put on an ANTI SLIP numnah......They are like chinese burns on your skin...

Have you spoken to Poohsmate??? He is a saddle fitter on NR. I have just had a new saddle and mine is slipping. But what has happened is my horses muscles are not equal on both sides. So the saddle slips into the dip behind his right shoulder. Poohsmate advised me to go and get some FibreGee and made a silohette of extra padding needed to be stitched to the numnah on the side of the dip. This then prevents the slipping.

Another thing to be aware of is are you putting more weight into one side of your body...?????? I am terribly heavy on my right side....:o

And..............are you confident that your stirrups are equal lengths???;)

Do you use an elastic girth? Girths with elastic only on one end can make saddles slip to one side on round cobby types.

Thanks Novice Nic. That is some really useful advice. I haven't used the limpet on my new saddle with him (that was with my old saddle) I have only been using the very thin saddle cloths - to be honest I wasn't sure about using a non slip saddle cloth.

When the saddler came out to fit the new saddle he did say that he had back muscle wastage so that's probably why the saddle is slipping.

Sorry to sound simple here but where do you get the fibre gee from?

I also use a wintec girth on him. My stirrups are equal length but I must change them over as they stretch through getting on.

Thanks again Novice Nic. :D

My saddle slips too, from side to side, not forward or back. My saddle goes either way though, and yes it is done up tight. My stirrups are the same length but my legs are different lengths. Don't laugh! Its quite common apparently!!

On one side I get cramp when I'm doing a long hack if the stirrups are the same length, and actually have to adjust them so they are different lengths so I'm more comfortable.
Before I owned my own horse I used to ride a friends and use to get this cramp. I thought it was the way I was riding, but since owning my own I have realised having a completely different saddle, different shape and size of horse that its me.

It could be that your body is unbalanced though. There not much you can do about that.

Interesting about the girth comments. Mine is elastic on one side. I need to get a new one so I might try a different style. Somebody a few weeks ago on NR was saying about them being curved or straight but I can't remember what the conclusion of this was.

You can get it from your local tack shop...Doesnt cost much it is just square padding........If you like I will post piccies of my "And heres one I made earlier" patch on my numnah......just pm me if you would like me to....:)
