I wonder if any one can help me? I am an acupuncturist and am also qualified in chinese herbal medicine (for two legged beings...). Unfortunately no one except a vet can do acupuncture on horses, which is a problem for me, as this was the area I wanted to go into. I am however very interested in shiatsu (a manipulative muscle technique) which is useful for horses (and riders!) and can be practised by people other than a vet. Does any one know how to get qulified for this practice? I think I need to do it on people first, but don't know where to start...... Any info/advice gratyefully recieved :)

Hi,
From what I know, certainly in most states of the US and I believe in Australia too, a human acupuncturist can also work on animals.
I am not sure, but I think it is expected that you do an animal acupuncturist course, and once that is complete you are expected to work in close relation with a vet surgeon. If I were you I would look into it if you are really keen. I was very keen to do acupuncture on both human and animals, and began looking into courses from Australia, (coz that is where I am from) and I found a number of places that taught animal acupuncture. I stopped my search because I have to be able to do the courses by correspondence, as we move countries quite alot, and the governing bodies would not recognise the qualifications of any certificate/degree done externally.
Goodluck, I cant help with the Shiatsu...sorry bout that.

there are certainly people doing shiatsu on horses in UK - I've seen it in magazines. (Don't ask me to remember which one or which month :D )
Are you sure about acupuncture ? I know Vets have to make a referral for certain treatments, but I didn't know they were the only people who could do some of them....

Pamplemousse, try this link which will tell you all about Shiatsu for horses and dogs. I met Jacqueline a couple of years ago as I went to one of her demos and we have a mutual friend and she is very approchable so I'm sure she would give you more info. Hope this is helpful.
