I think it would be a good idea to have a section in the members list where you can find all other NR's who live in the surrounding areas to you!
Haha - maybe there already is one somewhere and im being "blonde"??
Thought it would be a good idea for people who are looking for sharers/riders/riding schools etc. :)

Could be a good idea. Dont know if there's any in my area (Hastings) or not. Although there's a lot of livery yards and Riding Schools (I would not use any of the riding schools), Hastings doesn't seem particularly horsey really, although there are a lot of people with horses. However, you dont have to be horsy to own and ride one.

the idea doesnt seem horsey or your local riding schools:confused:
I just thought it would be good for people needing help!
I constantly see people putting up threads looking for good quality local riding schools.
And as im looking for someone to help exercise / share my horse im in desperate need to find horsey people near by :)

I think it would be nice sometimes if someone else could help out with the riding but I'd be a bit wary of doing this as we live in "litigious" times. I think the hassle of sharing may well outweigh the advantages.

Well, I know there was a map thing made, quite a while ago, where you could put your location and username and stuff, so you can find those who live nearby to you. However, I done a search for it and can't seem to find it. I'm pretty sure it was in the meet-ups section and made by baymare. Does anyone know what I'm talking about or have I just made this up :p ?

I think it would be nice sometimes if someone else could help out with the riding but I'd be a bit wary of doing this as we live in "litigious" times. I think the hassle of sharing may well outweigh the advantages. I pay the livery yard owner's daughter to ride Falcon for me twice a week and this, I find, works very well. I think if you advertise for someone to ride your pony for you say twice a week, it would be wise to get them to sign a disclaimer regarding accidents etc. This would absolve you from any blame. In any case, it would be wise to explain to any prospective 'helper' that horses can be unpredictable and, if they want to ride, then you have warned them.

yeah ive had a sharer for 3years now and never had any probs but sounds like a great idea thanks - just incase! :)

Hi added myself to map but can't understand why it says 'you' on my picture, when it should say AengusOg??????????!

Aengus,
I think it just means that you are logged in and the map 'knows' it's you who is viewing it. For the rest of us it should say AengusOg

Never seen that before.

Now I know that when I stay with my OH, I am more than halfway to Raggydoll.

:p

Unfortunately it only let me enter one location, Edinburgh not Sheffield.

I think a page with links, split up into different areas, would be brilliant.

Then I could click on 'England - North', then click on another link on the next page for 'Yorkshire' and have a list of all the NR members and where they live (alphabetically by place so you could just choose to look for all the people in Sheffield or all the people in Doncaster or whatever). And a link to the map would be good too.

Of course participation would be voluntary but it would be really good for someone as appalling at geography as me to see who is nearby!

I can't find you in Scotland, AengusOg - unless you added yourself in Renfrewshire...there is a nameless point there?

Thanks Berry................I may try again.....should be a blue dot on the east coast..

Trouble is it takes an age to do as I can only get a dial-up connection where I am. Plus I'm not all that computer literate.

as much as its great to find out there are people living very close to you... surely its not a good thing for the younger members to do (sorry to put a cynacal(sp?) view on it :o)

Dont (well cant actually) afford to pay anyone now to ride Falcon - so I'm not the flavour of the month at the yard either as it was the YO's daughter that rode him. Aint it funny how folk can change when you can no longer afford their services? So....I think the best course of action I can take is to leave that yard if and when I find somewhere else. YO is distinctly cool to me now.

Of course you're right coss

The modern world can be a very dangerous place for young persons, and the internet holds particular dangers, as we all (should) know.

As a fifty year old male (happily married, with two young children), working in the horse industry, I have to be particularly careful in my dealings with young or vulnerable people. However I believe the best way to protect myself and them is to always make sure that parents and/or yard-owner know exactly what is happening all the time. I always announce my arrival and departure, as well as any details of arranged future visits, to the person in charge too. Also I try to book appointments so that there are always several people at the yard, so that I can work with my client openly without fear of any misunderstandings.

I'm not paranoid about it, but it's important for all to feel comfortable in those situations.

I would agree with your concerns regarding the map showing 'people near you', and would say to everyone that they should be careful about entering information along with their locality, and to always make a friend/relative/YO aware of anyone who wishes to arrange a meeting.

We are relatively lucky in the horse world, there is a prevailing sense of friendship which helps those who may need protection.
