Helloooo! Big grins are abundent:D :D :D
Lesson went well had a brief warm up on Syd and then on to a lovely old boy called Colt who was very nice to me...it was alot different I had forgotten how much ponies bounce.. but I did a passable rising trot and lots of walk and stop...steering etc...it felt really good to be back on..unfortunately another 10 days until my next lesson. So we are on our way again and I am another step closer to that 4 legged dream of mine!;)
Just need to get the body protector sorted didn't have a lot of joy today went to 2 shops the first had the Aerowear one that I really liked and I thought fitted as I had tried one at the Windsor Show...but was told it was an inch and a half too long and that I would need one made...then went to another place and they showed me a Roddy Powell one..this felt very bulky on and didn't feel as good quality so wasn't sure what to do..really want to get my own...
Anyway hopefully I'll get some pictures next time.
Have a wonderful Bank Holiday one and all!

Wahey! Well done you! That is really great - the ten days til you get back on Colt are going to seem to be a long, long time but at least you'll be able to run over today in your mind and feel a warm glow about how well it went! :D

Brilliant FR!
Wow you and pepsimaxrocks are just amazing!
Best of luck to you and keep us all updated.
Re the BP - have you tried a Race Safe yet?
I bought a Rodney Powell about 3 years ago - if I was going cross country I would feel pretty good in it but boy is it hard, uncomfortable and bulky.
I bought my race safe second hand - I still feel very safe but it is soooo much more comfortable and a little cooler too.
Good luck with your choice.

I have a requisite one. It's adjustable pretty much in every shape or form. Saved me from breaking every rib and puncturing a lung when i fell off
I am the sharer of good news......
Anyway, sorry, glad your ride went well :D:D

Well done FR! Colt sounds just gorgeous and you have done so well. 10 days will quickly pass.... I am just so so chuffed for you - your early prognosis was worse than mine and you have made it back to lessons, Syd and a real horse. Great news, look forward to next update.
(Tuesday for my next lesson, but I feel quite stiff after Fri :o )

Good on you FR. It makes me smile to hear of your progress. A good friend of mine could not get over her fear of riding, she bought herself a protective vest and then went on a four day riding camp through the bush with a group of friends and she came back a confident rider. She said the vest gave her so much confidence and she didn't even know she had it on it was so comfortable. So I hope you find a suitable one. Kindest regards Oldbushy:)

Very good news. And may be that horse was more bouncy in trot than the ones you rode before. They vary enormously.
As for the bp. My OH found the Rodney Powell bulky and it made him immovable. As I have posted here before we drove many many miles to try on the different sorts. Buttons at West End is a saddler where I go regularly. I buy my hats there as they have lots of choice and are good at fitting.
They have the Airowear and Cobra (not Racesafe) and are not too far from you.
Having a Zippa made in a "standard" size but shorter does not cost more. Why don't you go for that?
Since people on NR love Racesafe, you could phone them and ask your nearest stockist. Rokers are not on the official stockist list, but do have them, near Guildford.
If you haven't already got it, I suggest you ask Rideaway to send you a copy of their latest spring catalogue. It has all the size charts in, plus for many brands the cost of making to measure or shortening etc. Of course I still recommend one tries them on as you are doing, but you can buy other stuff from Rideaway and their catalogue is a great help in showing one what is available.
For instance there is a bp in the latest catalogue I haven't seen before, called Universe Mars, similar to Zippa with a zip and separate straps to adjust for bust and waist, but cheaper.
Like some others on NR I never get on a horse without a bp. I have had several falls but only one of them (at speed onto tarmac) caused injury, and most times I just brush myself down and remount. I have never ever needed to go to hospital after a fall.
However, I should confess that I am scared of simulators and of falling off them. I rely so much on that animal communication one has on the back of a horse.
I join the many people on NR who rejoice that you are back in the saddle.

Well done, FR :D It must be great to be riding again :D
I use the Champion Cobra BP for jumping and xc and find it REALLY comfortable once it's been on for a few minutes.
I'm booked on a simulator course in August and can't wait :D I've never been on a simulator before but I definitely need some sorting out as I feel like I've forgotten everything

Thank you everyone so lovely to get so much support!:D
Skib...went to Buttons to get fitted and liked the Aerowear one which they say they can get altered for no extra and are going to call their suppliers on tuesday. They made me sit on a saddle and everything to check the fit..she also thought I was a size 6..those were the days!! Bless her heart. I went to Chobham rider to look but they only stock the one brand...and it was really uncomfortable..breathing was not an option...and it felt the same length as the other.
Bay Mare ...good luck on your course let us know how you get on!
LibbyO ..very chuffed no aches and pains haven't taken any painkillers for about 2-3 weeks now..some cold remedies though..sniff! My seat bones didn't even hurt this time after going on Syd.
Can't wait to go on Colt again...I think the RI said he was 22...awwww!

Lucky you. I ached when I came back of hoilidays and rode again!
What breed is colt?
OneStepCloser
28th May 2007, 09:32 AM
I don't know what breed he is (feel free to guess), I don't think it's anything specific, but he's a very nicely put together little pony. He's quite lazy and is happy to go round gently looking after his riders, but if you get a good rider on him with a pair of spurs to wake him up to their leg, he can go in a lovely outline and he can do half pass, shoulder in, travers, leg yield, counter canter, canter serpentines etc. he's actually really well schooled.
He's a right little escape artist, he can get out of anything! He can also dribble for England! He's always got a long line of slobber coming out of his mouth when ridden, not fun when you've got to lead him!
I found another pic of him
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h288/hks1786/Colt2.jpg
And with static hair in the stable, looking very cheeky

Well done FR! Really really pleased for you. Made me smile even more because I had imagined you as rather tall and leggy .... not quite the size to ride Colt ! I think you'll have a lot of fun with him.
Hope your next lesson goes just as well.
So glad you're back in the saddle - it's the best place to be !
Keep posting your updates, won't you?!

haha - don't apologise for it - you're lucky enough to be able to ride ponies as well as the much bigger horses! Something the taller ones amongst us unfortunately can't do, we're "stuck" with the 15.3 and upwards types. Make the most of it and enjoy riding the little ones, they're so much fun!

The only disadvantage is that as well as being small I'm quite light (7st 10lb) I do sometimes think that sitting down in my seat to stop would be a bit easier if I was heavier..or will that come with time?

I think the answer to both questions is yes, Katrina. It will come with time, and yes it would be easier with a bit more weight on you. But you will manage it.
Are you tuning in at all to the book club discussions? The "bearing down" is really helpful with this.
Best of luck with it

Hi Katrina
As if I would tease you - although it is quite a good one - whoever thought that by having children we could learn to control horses...
