View Full Version : Mentoring

I have another idea (hey two in one day!) which sort of links in with the 'People in the same area' thread and also a thread i have posted in the New Rider section about 'getting stable management experience'..

How about a thread where people who own horses can offer to 'mentor' new riders to give them some practical experience and knowledge about keeping horses. Then people in the same area can PM the mentor and arrange something.

I think this would be valuable to people like myself who feel a bit old and inexperienced to volunteer at the RS. It also seems there are people who are willing to do this as several posters said they would be happy for some help.

It is a nice idea, I think it has gone on informally for a long time. I know I really appreciated being able to help out with and handle non school horses who belonged to the NR members I visited long long ago, and it has been nice to pass on the favour now and again since :)

I mentor 6 young engineers at work and have always founded mentoring very rewarding. One of my mentees is getting married in September and I am providing my lorry (and myself) to transport her pony to the wedding ceremony.

hi I am Pibstar and I feel all proud of myself now :D :D :D :D i really enjoyed sharing a day in the life of Mollie - hubby doesnt like horses so was nice to chat to someone about my little ways.

As i have said in another thread this morning, what goes around comes around, create good carma and good things will happen:D . Blackhorses is doing the same for me, I am visiting her four (?) foals at the end of June with a friend - CANT WAIT!! Best type of holiday in my mind - horses, foals and pubs!!!!;)

Well i spent a great couple of hours with Est and her two gorg horses - Merrick and Ria! :D . For the first time ever i had a go at grooming a horse (the BHS way!). Merrick was such a good boy and didn't seem to mind too much about me moving all the dirt around on him! he did look a little shiner afterwards!. Although i think i need to be a bit rougher next time! I also picked out his hoofs which was exicting and scary! he is quite big close up. We also went round to see all the other horses so i got lots of petting in of horses and dogs! all in all a great way to spend an evening! :D thank you Est!

Next time we may be taking Merrick to the school! v.exciting!

This pm I spent a really enjoyable pm with Rarah and the gorgeous Logic. Main 'job' of the pm was to give Logic her first bath of the summer and to make her look even more beautiful for her show tomorrow. It was great and Logic was soooo good standing still for hours. By the end Logic was clean, shiny and so soft and we were filthy!:D

I now know loads I didn't know before - things I couldn't believe I didn't know such as a girth has buckles on both sides, duh! and things I'll remember forever such as why its important to soak sugarbeet. I can't wait to go back.:)

Rarah - Thank you so much for being so welcoming and letting me come again. Good luck for tomorrow - I hope Logic doesn't get too mucky tonight.

It was lovely to meet you Vonandiz -

Logic looked fabulous by the time we'd finished - although we did forgot to wash her forelock somehow (too busy talking ;) ). I've told her that she must not do any green poohs down her lovely white legs tonight - somehow I don't think she was listening though

Thank you very much for your help today. Looking forward to doing it again sometime soon :)

Personally, I don't feel experienced enough to actually be a mentor (I'm sure some riding school riders know as much as I do :o). But I would be very happy for someone horseless to come and visit me and my horse, depending on what they would like to gain from the experience. I'm always very happy to pass on my limited knowledge.

Joking aside, it's great having Mistertron coming over :) Ria and Merrick have really taken to her, and I enjoy having the company. I agree with Rhein, I haven't got the experience to be a proper mentor but we're having fun anyway! Well I am, I hope Mistertron is too :p

Next visit I will *have* to do the mucking out before she arrives (booooo) because we're planning to wash Merrick's tail for the first time in 3 years  It probably hasn't been brushed for the same amount of time :D so it will probably take the whole visit! :D

Yes me ! (from NZ) NZ Dressage if you don't mind the odd question on your PM that would be great. I don't have my own horse but when I get to that stage I would love some advice:):) If there is anything you could suggest me doing in the interim to improve riding/horse care in the Auckland region let me know! Also any events that would be worth watching. I am having lessons twice a week at two different riding schools but would love some experience hacking so if you know of anywhere that could assist me that would be fab!

When I am good enough I would love to start with a share/lease or exercise situation:)

i live in Plymouth (ivybridge) and used to ride a little as a child, and was lucky enough to be taaught to drive by a very kind friend.

i was hoping to meet someone in my area that would teach me how to care for a horse, and basic riding to get me to a standard that i could own a horse without making it worse!!!

any help or advice would be much appreciated!!

Just wanted to add another post to this.......

I live in Northants and would love to be able to help-out with someones horse/pony. I'm trying to gain horse care and stable management experience. I'm 34yrs and have a family but could spare a couple of mornings/evening a week to help-out. I would need teaching at first but I'm confident around horses and not looking for rides just the care side of things. I have transport and could consider the surrounding areas bucks, beds ect..

I'm in Hampshire, and can offer anyone experience in most things I think! We have a wide range of ponies here, from miniatures up to my own riding ponies. We train ponies, for riding & driving as well as those with problems. We show inhand, and when I lose more weight, hopefully under saddle too. When I lose my baby weight finally, and my mare has had her foal next year, hopefully we'll start back with the dressage training again. I do have a couple of ponies who can be ridden by novices, under close supervision, and by more experienced riders also. We have stallions, mares in foal & foals all on site at any one time. The very keen could always help us on foal watch next year!!! Would give me a break. :D I've had total beginners around the ponies, as well as more experienced people. If it wasn't for the mentors I had when I first got into horses years ago, I wouldn't be where I am now - so I ought to be putting back - if that makes sense. :)

pm a mod and ask? since you started the thread probably you are best one to do it? :)
I cant really see any probs as long as they put our general area rather than exact place?, wouldnt want anyone seeing it and joining the board just to pm us and find out where our lovely horses are kept :o

Hi, have just joined the forum today and if there is anyone in the aldershot/fleet area who would like a mentor i would be willing to help them out. I have 19 years of experience with horses, had my mare since she was 1yr and she is now 18. I am willing to share knowledge with anyone who is interested in learning. Can teach if they are close to aldershot/fleet (for free). Other wise I can share knowledge over the internet. Onyone interested let me know. Dawn

I am in North Devon and more than happy to have some one come and play with my girls and help out - have been doing this for 30+ years so have an idea of what I am doing - would be ideal for someone who wants to learn about showing as that is my real passion - after xmas will have my other section D mare available for hacking just got to grow her some feet first as the foot care in her previous home was appauling poor girly not sure what she is like to hack but should be okay. PM me if you are interested. Vanessa

What a great idea!

Don't suppose there's anyone in the Barnsley/North Sheffield type area who'd like to impart their worldly knowledge on me? I've shared horses before and know a fair amount, but think there's room for much more before I can think about a full loan or (gasp) buying my own :)

Anyone between west Leeds and Skipton sort of area would be welcome to help out with ours.

Right on the moor so loads of off road hacking, if you can stand the cold.

Not doing much now except bringing on youngster and stable management although cobs can be ridden, clipped but not very fit at the moment.

And once we start showing again would love some help too, so anyone wanting to practice their show prep (especially plaiting as we've never had to do it before and seem to have two left hands :D)

Lots of horses on our yard (although we have our own land) and some very very strange people but never boring.:D

Because we are miles from a bus route you would probably need your own transport although there are usually people around to get a lift from.

I would love to learn and help, must warn you i am not the youngest around 45 if you would like you can pm me

To loan or share?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To loan or share.

Does anyone know what I would be able to loan or share in the west Yorkshire not bothered which one! Also a mentor would be great!

The problem I'm having is that I'm a novice so I need someone who is willing to let me learn.

I've tried ads in tack shops and looking on the net.

I don’t know anyone horsey and at my riding school they don’t seem that bothered to help me learn as I have asked about how I'd like to learn more but they said they would have to charge me lesson prices to help muck out and all that, is this right?

Also no one seems to tack up all the horses are ready to go for your lesson

so if anyone would like to mentor me, that would be great!

Thanks

Rugged Famo

mentor desparately needed in the Aberystwyth area. Can only travel a max. of a half-hour drive away. I am not getting anything out of my lessons anymore. I need someone who will not judge me or pressure me and just let me muddle through it (and I do yell for help when I need it :p :D) I can walk and trot confidently and I am working on my canter at the mo. Also working on mounting from the ground (which I get told off about not being able to do) so mounting block provisions appreciated. :p

I am 5'2" and weigh 152lbs and decreasing. (weighed 178lbs when I started riding) I ride 14.2hh stocky types ideally (my fave. pony at the mo. is a haffy x called Napoleon. :D)

I too have tried ads in tack shops, the riding school etc. but it seems that shares go by word of mouth out here and especially local to Aber it tends to be the equine studies students or people that compete that get them. Thanks in advance for replies. :D

For all of those out there looking for mentors - hope you soon find kind sympathetic folk to help. They are about, just keep looking.:)

Sorry if you are also looking but have not found loan horses yet. Wish you were all down my way a bit. (Near Newmarket/Ely). The lady who runs our yard is always crying out for good people to care and loan her horses, there just isn't enough people down here! So it can go the other way too!:o

I too am working my way through several confidence issues too at present and would love a mentor (I have a horse!) but the ppl who love to 'give' me advice at present are mostly of the 'Livery Police' type and who think that older lady rider+natural horsemanship interests are laughable and 'naive' at the very least. Hasn't done much for my confidence levels I can tell you. But I am not giving up, - made of stronger stuff than that, but it would be good to have a local mentor who could encourage me along, and not always tell me what I 'should' be doing and always negative what I am doing wrong!

Be positive those of you out there looking - at the very least we can always mentor each other through this forum!!! :):)Oumbagirl...

Anyone want to come and be my mentoree in Essex (Colchester area)? My 2 cobs live out 24/7 and are barefoot. Can’t do much with them in this sort of weather as no real facilities, but if you can bear with me through the muddy weeks then we can do more in Spring. You would need to be old enough and preferably able to drive although it may be possible to reach me from the local station. As for riding, there may be some, depending upon how competent you are, as I’m no riding instructor! One advantage being that you can probably help me with some TTEAM/TTOUCH with the horses. Abserd and Est - thanks for comments - I couldn't actually teach someone to be a Practitioner, but I can do one-day workshops, talks etc. And of course, anyone helping me would be able to learn some basic stuff with me. Seems there's nobody near enough and horseless to help me.

Unfortunately, those with horses rarely have the necessary time or committment to help anyone else.

You could always organise a one day workshop at your yard with a Practitioner near to you. They are very popular.

I'm in the North Devon area but willing to travel as far as Exeter if it was for like a day of mentoring.
I ride regularly and I work with horses but I really really am dying to get a bit more experience with the training side of things and driving!
I am more than willing to muck out, groom and do general dogsbody work, and I don't mind taking a few tumbles if anybody perhaps needs a light (8st) ragdoll to help with backing/training? *looks hopeful* :o

Im interested to learn about any aspect of training, be that with young horses, retraining, clicker training, natural horsemanship, classical. I just want to learn :)
I have had a go at driving once, but it was a long while ago, so anybody willing to share their driving knowledge then I would be extremely grateful! :D

I went down to meet Doris and her three beautiful horses today for a 'mentoring' session. Had great fun getting a little introduction to TTEAM work, which was fascinating. Hope to go back again soon and learn some more, as well as be of some help to Doris! :)

Hi I live in the Chester Le Street / Durham area and would love to have the chance of helping someone with their horsies, Ive only been taking lessons since the beginning of January so am extremely novice and I have no stable management at all but would love to learn about everything.!

Am still quite nervous of horses when Im on the ground but would be very greatful if anyone out there would be willing to help me learn.

I can drive so reasonable distances no problem.

Ps, Am 29 with a veritable zoo at home so no stranger to poo picking!! (2 giant rotties who think they are horses, 1 ferrett and a few tarantulas! and maybe the messiest of all - a builder husband and a 9 year old son!)

Thanks

Rugged Famo

im a 10minute drive from you if your interested??:) just taken on a sharer so thats a shame, but your welcome to come. :)

I'm in North Yorkshire (in what used to be Cleveland) and would be happy to mentor someone on general horse care. My horse is currently out 24/7, but would happily teach someone about grooming, basic first aid, rug management, etc, and when we go back to the livery yard, I would be able to go on to mucking out, lungeing and tack.

Mentoring sounds fantastic, what a fabulous idea! I'm 36 and have been riding on/off for 5 years but not confident rider. Am considering buying my first horse but would love and really appreciate mentoring from an experienced owner so that I can learn what's involved and so that I can offer my future horse the very best. I don't have any experience other than did BHS Horse owners certificate a few years back but am a fast learner and willing to learn.

If anyone in South Wales area (UK) would fancy taking a chance on me and being my mentor, I would repay your trust in me 100-fold.

Have bought daisy rein, but I am disabled and although I go on him in summer when he is really hot and tired for a short while, it is not ideal, and I am not mobile enough to deal with the tamtrums any more. I actually cannot believe this thread! Other forums do not even allow DISCUSSIONS of meet ups because of the risk involved! Other than that, is it not a bit stupid to have a 'mentor' who's knowledge has not been proven other than that they talk on a forum?????? I dont want a debate to start because debate seems to get threads closed around here. This seems to be a popular thread despite my shock about it, but I had to say something because it would be awful if people were randomly meeting without giving the circumstances any thought. Even if people never meet, it is a bit narrow minded to have a mentor from a forum!!!

Narrow-minded is definately the wrong term to use. It could be thought as a little say..naive? to meet up with someone off a forum who claims to have good knowledge on horses, but it's not as if they're being forced to meet up, they will have to use their own self judgement in order to decide if the claimed knowledge is genuine.

lolahutt
1st Jul 2008, 08:00 PM
Meant narrow minded in relying on a single person esp one who's worth as a teacher of any sort is not proven. Just highlighting some reasons why this is not such a good idea, just because I am amazed this thread is even here!

but it's not as if they're being forced to meet up, they will have to use their own self judgement in order to decide if the claimed knowledge is genuine.

True but a lot of the people on this forum are kids young enough to believe an adult cos the adults lips are moving - and their parents aren't necessarily knowledgable enough about horses to know better. Also from what I've seen the relationship between someone's ability to post on a forum doesn't always match up with the reality of their horsemanship. For some less scrupulous people an open minded person is simply virgin territory for the claiming;)

Mistertron
2nd Jul 2008, 06:14 PM
Please don't hi-jack this thread just because its not something you want to do. People make their own choices about meeting people off forums etc - there is even a 'Meet Up' section in the Cafe area on here!. I'm sure this thread would of been closed a long time ago if the Mods didnt agree with it. 'Mentor' might not of been the best choice of wording but this thread was basically for people to get in touch with horse owners in their area - we arent all lucky enough to know people that own horses. We all have to learn somehow and helping out at a riding school is not always an option. This seemed a logic way to put people in touch to get some hands on experience. There has been quite a few success stories with people going on to share and make great friends etc.

I'm not going to say anymore on the subject because this is just typical of New Rider nowadays.

Not hijacking, simply putting out some (important) thoughts that have been overlooked! :)

*Sez*
2nd Jul 2008, 08:43 PM
The way I see it is that if anyone in my area is wanting a bit more hands-on experience and their local RS won't permit it (which is happening all over the country due to insurance issues) then how are people supposed to learn? Yes, there are various courses but they're not easily accessed in some parts of the country and often cost a small fortune.
So if someone wants to be shown the basics of horse-care - mucking out; grooming; tack cleaning; a bit of first aid; lungeing; safe handling, then what's wrong with owners offering a bit of their time to show them?
None of us have said that we know everything, or that our ways are the ONLY ways. I think of it as giving an opportunity to someone who sensibly wants to learn a bit more than the riding side of things before they take the plunge into buying or loaning.
Fair enough, if they were under 16, I would want to speak to a parent or guardian to ensure they were happy about it and I wouldn't have a problem in showing them my CRB if they were at all concerned about me being unfit to be around kids, and I would have to use my best judgement with an adult and hope that they would do the same on meeting me.
Where's the harm in that?

Est

I've been lucky enough to meet several NR people in real life from just this type of thread.

The Mentoring thread itself put me in touch with Mistertron and she ended up sharing one of my horses for about 6 months as a result. This was hugely beneficial for both of us.

As Mistertron says, perhaps the term "mentor" carries an implication of expertise or authority which was not originally intended. However, it ensures that the intention of matching up horse owners with non-horse owners is instantly understandable, where an alternative word (perhaps "befriending" or the like) might not be.

It is of course advisable for people to exercise common sense* when arranging meet-ups (and this applies to the meet-ups forum in the Cafe area as well). A reminder about this is always useful, so thank you lolahutt :)

* Younger members should only arrange meet-ups with their parents' full knowledge and consent. The safest option is always to take along a parent or trusted adult with you.

Some basic safety tips for members:

* Remember that anyone online could lie about their age, gender, job, interests etc. You may not be talking to the person you think they are.

* Don't rush to arrange a meeting. Get to know the "online" person over a period of time, and check their communications for consistency of detail.

* Make sure a friend knows where you are going and at what time you are due back. First meetings should always be short meetings!

* Take along a mobile phone and some cash, plus the phone number of a taxi company local to your meeting area.

* Meet in a public place initially - never go straight to someone's yard.

* Stick to soft drinks from bottles/cans, and don't leave them unattended at any point as they could be tampered with.

* Listen to your gut instinct. If something doesn't feel right, make your excuses and leave straight away.

That said, I hope that members will continue to use this thread responsibly and gain as much enjoyment from it as I was fortunate to :)

Agree with the above - I've met the most supportive person on here, even though I've only been to visit her horse once we're still emailing and I really feel as though I've made a friend. :)

I've also met up with people from another forum I'm on.

In both cases I've always made sure that the inital meeting has taken place in a busy public area and that someone else (friend/family) knows where I'm going. I've also tried to get to know them over t'interweb first and I think exchanging phone numbers is always a good idea as at least you can ring them up and make sure they sound genuine.

Hopefully that is all teaching you to suck eggs!

You're so right about the insurance - whatever happened before underwriters were invented:mad:

I think mentoring is an invaluable way of learning - even for kids. Not everyone has had a crb check done though:)
I'll say the next bit and please believe generally I'm allergic to risk assessments. Given that there are people who specialise in meeting kids by feigning an interest in say something like ponies the subject of online mentoring and subsequent meetings up shouldn't be introduced as totally trouble free.
Having said that a forum like NR exists partly for the purpose of online mentoring (DIY or otherwise) with the added potential for social networking thrown in. To formally introduce a mentoring scheme would have the folk in the NR office very nervous indeed that their site be hijacked by just the very sort of people CEOPS and other schemes aim to protect kids from.

I am considering looking for a sharer, (more for the help than for the money- although his shoes when he is being ridden cost a fortune!) but as I have only had Samson for a month, think it may be a bit early (I dont know what he is like in every situation yet) If anyone in the Reading, Berkshire area would like a bit of 'hands on' experience with a 17.2 Shire gelding , riding wize, not sure what he's like yet! then PM me - he is a huge lump but he is lovely
