In comparison to a snaffle, what size weymouth set would you go for? Daffy's snaffle is 5.5" due to where he likes it to hang in his mouth, his pelhams are 5" as is his full cheek snaffle.
I'm toying with the idea of hiring a double to see what he makes of it in the not too distant future.

5 for the curb and 5.5 for the snaffle.

Thanks.
How about the combination? All his bits have a lozenge, his snaffle is a loose ring although his full cheek is eggbutt. I think he prefers the former, although he'll go well in each. I know they do a bridoon with a lozenge.

if he prefers the loosering then do sliding cheek weymouth and loosering bridoon. petal has a french link bridoon, she goes a lot better in that than she did in the single joint.

Have hired a set, sliding cheek weymouth with port, and then a loose ring jointed bridoon. 5 1/2" as that's all they had (theory being they could be put in his mouth to see if he tolerates them as long as they aren't too small) and compared to his normal bits at home, I think it'll be right. I forgot that Cottage Craft bits come up almost 1/4" big.
So plan is to put it on him tomorrow, if he's not reacting badly to them I'll hop on and walk him around, make sure he's ok when the bits are actually used as he might try and evade in the same way he does his pelham. I'm hoping he won't because the action is independent, but who knows.
Then the bits will be returned, and I'll know whether we're ignoring the pelham and working towards the double, or whether I need to try and get him working with the pelham again.

petal headbutts me in the nose in a pelham the instant it take a contact, and is fine in a double. they do know - hopefully he will like it.

I hope so, because I don't know how on earth I'll stop him evading the pelham. He twists his head and takes the shank in his mouth. With his show pelham, the shanks are short enough that the ring can get hooked over a tooth!

I'm surprised at that, he was really settled in it, and even stood whilst I faffed around fitting it, although we'll need to work on the part where I get it in his mouth in the first place.
Walked, trotted and cantered on both reins. Didn't ask for an outline, but he went off the leg nicely and was responsive. If there was a problem I would've expected protesting canters on the spot etc.
So we now know we're aiming for the double by August.
