My horse has been sound now for nearly five weeks after her laminitis. We've been walking out in the fields and on the roads, and from now on the road work will increase as she gets fitter. She's unshod and has been for years. Last summer and the winter before that she walked miles each weekend on the roads quite happily, but it wasn't every day. Should I get her boots for her front feet? Or wait and see? I'm worried that if I get her boots then her feet won't wear properly as that's the only chance they have to wear down (she's stabled now and won't be getting more than an hour or two's turnout this summer). After the laminitis part of me feels that her feet should be allowed to be natural as the new growth comes through - is this silly? Should I just boot anyway?

You could get boots, but only use them when going for long rides or on rides that really wear down the hooves.

wearing boots shouldnt be a problem as your trimmer will deal with removing any excess that is not worn down.

if it makes it more comfotable for her i would definatly go for it, especially as her hooves may have soften whilst being on a long perios of box rest in different conditions.
