Hi
I've not posted on here for ages:eek:, but I've been lurking around reading all your threads ;).
Anyway, I have a question, if you were "trotting over raised poles" and "cantering over single poles", as I have to for my next progressive riding test, would a horse (15.2hh) actually jump the poles, or just step over them? Also, would you go into jumping postion over them or just ride normally over them? :o
Sorry about the silly questions:o but I just want to know what to do:rolleyes:
Thanks

When I did raised trotting poles with Sam the idea was for him to trot over them - although it took him a while to realise that he could not jump 5 trotting poles in a row. I rise to the trot as normal when going over raised poles - the idea is to get them to lift their legs enough to not knock the pole over. Thats how my RI does it anyway. Cantering over single poles on the ground I (try to) remain seated, Sam would sometimes try and jump it but the idea is to maintain the flow of the canter over the pole:)

Thanks Morganna :D, it's just I'm supposed to be doing that in my next lesson and I like to know what to expect ;)

yu can do both, two point or just requalr... depends on what your doing, if your doing jumping, or learning to jump then do two point, or if your just riding for fun, or doing dressage just ride over them normally..
and it really depends on your horse whether they will jump it or not. A lazy horse or an expierienced horse is a lot less likely to jump it than a green horse or a very energetic horse, but theres always a few exceptions, but it really just depends on the horse, yu can always teach them not to jump it though. the more they get use to it the less likely they are to jump it

how do you stop them jumping the poles when you canter over them?
my horse insists on doing it, i was attempting to use canter poles for shortening and lengthening strides in between, but he jumps them, kind of messing up the concentration on shortening and lengthening!

With raised trot poles:
a) don't rise as you'll ruin the horses stride and balance
b) they shouldn't jump them as theres not enough space
c) try to just stand in your stirrups, not particularly light seat, just up and out of the saddle.
Shona - with canter poles for related distance...persevere! Remain seated in the saddle, really leg to hand. Hold your horse through the upper thighs. If your sat nice and deep in the saddle then its much harder for them to jump. Keep a nice slow canter. Should help.
Then again, easier said than done! The iceys I ride still jump my canter poles ;)

Well said. I've started working on really riding Coquette forward with lots of power from her hind end. When I was letting her slack off on the canter, she'd just canter over them. Now that I'm really keeping my leg on and driving her forward, she'll sort of bunny hop them (not really a proper jump, just a sort of bounce :p).
If you're working on poles as preparation for jumping, then practicing your jumping position over the poles is a good thing to do. Your instructor should tell you how she/he wants you to take the poles.

the problem is i think, because he doesnt trot, he jumps over poles we go over at a corto too (we have stopped trying those!), so canter poles have appeared as small jumps...
and he does love his jumping, so i think he might trying to surrepticiously persuade me to jump...
will try what you said ceri and see how it goes- thanks

Yes! Definatley.
However if you're like me and a wimp at jumping, or like myself and Shona use poles to help the giats (specifically gaited horses) then driving forward should be fine.
Keket, I think a little Coquette video update of these poles might be in order ;) Are you still in contact with Topaz? How is "my" mare?! :p

Hopefully there will be a Coquette jumping update tomorrow, and I'll stick in a little Topaz update if her owner okays it. ;) Will that suffice, Cer?
