My second silly thread of the day:o...
Can any of you knowledgeable NR’s out there tell me (or show me pictures with arrows and things) how you would put on …
1. A daisy rein and crupper
2. A bridle with a Pelham and roundings? (Do you fasten the curb chain when the bridle is on? If so how do you actually fasten it?)
3. A neckstrap (how loose should it be?)
Also can you tell/show me…
1. Exactly where the saddle should sit?
2. How loose the girth should be? (I’ve seen somewhere you should be able to fit two fingers beneath it, but not be able to cross them over, is this right?)
3. How you attach the numnah to the girth (it’s usually already attached)
Thanks for reading and maybe answering my embarrassing questions :o :D

A daisy rein and crupper
Daisy rein stops the horse getting its head down to eat the grass, used for kids who aren't strong enough to keep the ponies heads up. Quite like a bearing rein like in black beauty (but fix to the poll, not on to the bit...) hence they need to be fitted so that the horse has it s normal range of movement, it should only come in to action when the head goes way too low.
Crupper, you should be able to fit 4 fingers on top f each other (depending upon how dippy the horses back is) between it and the horses back. It should only come in to action when the saddle leaves its normal position. o fit a crupper, you lift the tail gently and place it gently underneath before lowering the tail gently. If you don't do it gently you will be booted in to hospital!
2. A bridle with a Pelham and roundings? (Do you fasten the curb chain when the bridle is on? If so how do you actually fasten it?)
You twist the chain untill it lies flat. If it has a loose ring, this should go at the botton. You fix it tight to the hooks for more controll, slack for less controll. They should lie in the curb groove which is very sensetive. Most horses need 1 or 2 fingers space between the chain and their head.
1. Exactly where the saddle should sit?
Start off with the saddle up the withers, slide it downand backwards. It will find a natural stopping place, sort of seating itself. This is where it goes. It can look slightly different on different horses depending upn conformation.
2. How loose the girth should be?
2 fingers
3. How you attach the numnah to the girth
Some numnahs have straps that go round the girth straps where hey join the saddle, some have straps that go round the skirts of the saddle

You shouldn't be embarrsed to start or reply to threads. Remember there is proberly someone out there wanting to know the same thing. People on new rider are always willing to help! :D
I think Alfies-slave has answered everything fine! Hasn't answered how loose should a neckstrap be- I think thats about two fingers, maybe slightly looser.

Be careful about saddle fit, most riders still put the saddle far too far forwards!
You are best testing a crupper's fit by putting your hand under it where it runs over the hip bone. If the horse has a naturally dippy back you might get it too tight.
As for how tight a girth should be it depends upon how good the rider is. If he is a beginner he will need a tighter girth to make sure the saddle won't slip.
I tend to ride with quite a lose girth....as has been pointed out to me on more than one occasion, I have room for another horse in there! :o I like to think the horse can move and breathe under his girth.
There are no hard and fast rules. A general one is with a Pelham or double bridle, always do it up from the throat lash down and undo it from the curb chain up.

Thanks, Alfies-slave, Vez and Wally, but with regards to the daisy rein/crupper, how do you actually put it on? I put one on the RS's shetland once with the RI but I can't remember how . What is attached before you put them on? I seem to remember that the saddle and crupper were attached, and maybe the bridle and daisy rein? :o. Do I remember that right? :o Thanks
