Well the first thing is to get their coat and skin in good condition. Feed the best quality feed that you can afford. You can add vegetable oil to their grain each day; that will give the coat a little extra shine. Grooming is then the next most important thing. This is my routine. I curry my horse for ten to fifteen minutes. Then I use a dandy brush to remove any of the hair and dirt I have loosened. Then, if you have one, use a vaccuum and go over the entire coat. When that is done, use a soft brush and go over the coat once again. Finish up by wiping the coat with a sheepskin mit to really make them shine. If you can, do this twice a day. I never use any coat polishes in my daily grooming. Ideally, you should bathe a few days before the show to allow the coat to regain some of its oil, but my horse becomes a mess, so the day before works for me. At the show, use the same grooming routine described above, but follow with a light spray of coat polish. I like Pepi, because it doesn't attract dust, but don't use too much because it can make the horse look greasy. My horse is a dark bay and she shows even the littlest amount of dust, so I use rubbing alcohol on a cloth to wipe off any dust or dirt right before I use the polish.
