Is it rare for horses to be attacked by predatory animals such as mountain lions or bears?

If the horses are protected, and humans are around most of the time, it's not that likely to happen..but in the wild, i don't think it is that rare, please correct me if I'm wrong though. ~alison~*

Hi!

I was always told that bears would not attack horses under normal circumstances, and neither would wolves, although those that are very used to humans might come close to yards & pose a threat, but that's very rare. I don't know about mountain lions, though, don't have them where I come from...

The natural enemy of the early horse was the sabre toothed tiger and the characteristics of our horses today were evolved to enable them to survive such attacks. The job of the Stallion in a herd would be to protect the mares from such attack. I would envisage that wolves would seek the weakest, i.e. foals, but certainly horses in Africa often bare the scares of attacks by lions.
