We have just had our ponies saddles arrive - the old owner kept saying they'd drop them off, they drop them off - well eventually they did!

On both of them, the leather is very stiff and hard so I oiled them last night with neastsfoot

The oil was just soaking straight in

I gave them a really good oil last night and this morning they were dry and stiff so I have done them again

was this right (panicking now LOL) and how much should I do?

the stirrup leathers are very dry and stiff as are the saddle flaps

any advice very very gratefully received

Sounds like your doing the right thing! I love Neatsfoot oil and harve revivied many a manky old bit of tack with it!! exactly how your doing it!

Until it stops soaking in. :)

If you watch whilst you're doing it, you should be able to tell which parts of the leather need more oil than others - it will soak in quicker in those areas. When I notice that, and the oil isn't sinking in elsewhere, I use a sponge to move the oil to where it's required.

Be very careful not to flex the leather until it's well oiled or it will start to crack.

phew - feel better!

the oil is just being drunk up - and yes I can see where it goes in almost immediately whereas some others take a few minutes and others take a few hours

I have sacrified one my pasty brushes as its getting it into all the nooks and crannies

Glad I am doing the right thing - thanks for the tip re flexing the leather as its temping - I'll leave well alone
