A lot of people say don' worry about getting your distance, just get a good rhythm and it will happen. Maybe sometimes you get lucky and get your distance, but for the most part you either end up too deep or too long. I start on the ground. Maybe set up some cones and as you canter your horse try to figure out how many strides are between each cone. When you get good at that, try to adjust your horses stride so that they meet the cone with their front feet, but remember, you don't want to be messing with your horse right before take off so make any adjustments well in advance, just like you were riding a course. Then set up some ground poles and do the same thing over them and when you are comfortable work over some small fences. It takes time, but finding your distance is an invaluable (?) skill.

this is what helped me ALOT

set up one pole and trot over it a couple times counting one two one two one two.... than canter it..... when you are apporching try counting down three two one (over) it REALY helps with your eye doing three, two, one to the jump, even if you counting is off you can kind of catch yourself before you get to the jump (sometimes i will start three two grrr jump)oopsi :D but just keep rising it and you will start to get a feeling three strides before the jump at least weather you will be long or short, and soon you will be able to catch it even earlier...... or

try not worring about it and let the horse flow and soon your eye will be able to pick it up
