well i've been having all of my 'firsts' over the last couple of weeks haven't i?!
and it wasn't so much of a fall as it was an emergency dismount!
here's what happened;
i'm riding harry (naughty pony!) around in the field again. we've done a couple of laps of trot and canter and now we're going to have a go at the xc jumps. well, i go over the first couple of times fairly ok (i kept losing my stirrups on the landing; advice regarding this would be much appreciated!) and i'm going to attempt a combination next. so i'm lining us up to go over, and somehow i lost all balance, lost my right stirrup, and ended up edging over to the right just as harry decided to shoot to the left. instead of trying to hang on, i deciding just to let go and landed on my bum! my knee hurt a little bit, but i had this complete out-of-body experience and just saw myself sitting on the ground while harry moves a couple of steps away and starts to eat grass! it took me a while to stop giggling and get back on again!
i attempted the jump another couple of times but by now i was laughing too hard and was still fairly unbalanced (i don't think i sit properly to harry's shape...but i can sit on anything else though! i always end up riding him crooked! help!!) so we gave up - it was the end of the lesson anyway.

maybe next week i'll have another first!

:D:p

Oh dear, hope you are ok now, :D I cant help re why you losing your stirrups when landing, you know I have only been riding just a bit longer than you. Could you be moving your legs back? Not in correct position for the jump:confused: Hope someone on here can help you out, good luck with your next lessons, and no laughting if you can help it hee hee:D

It sounds like if you are losing them through balance issues, then you could be reaching for them. Popping them up a hole or two (or whatever you feel more secure in), after warming up will hopefully keep you more secure and balanced in the saddle.

Lessons on the lunge (I know you will probably see this sort of reply to most balance and stirrups problems but this will really be an advantage to you)...stirrupless or even riding bareback will definitely improve your balance and and teach you to keep the weight in your heels and hang your legs down to balance and be secure.

Glad you're not hurt! :)

Of course, what an idiot I am, you have to go up one or two holes for the jumps, do you? That could be why. Do let us know:D Good Luck x
