I think I have access to a field for the summer. I am going to set up a driving course with some hazzards. Can some one tell me what sort of hazzards to include.
I want to prepare my youngsters well for when we do enter the competion areana.

You can use anything!
If you get a load of cones, that is your cones practice and dressage arena too.
Pallets are good, you hinge 3 together and put a catch on them to secure. Barrels, old tyres...
Some of the hardest obsticles are individual poles and nothing else. Set them out in a circle and have one in the middle.
If you can get some odd bits of post and rail fence you can make some interesting hazzards.
If you look at the HDT web site, there are plenty of pictures of hazzards. Look at the club pages too, they usualy have their own galleries with pictures of lots of different things.

What ever you do remember the obstables they build in HDT are very carefully thought out so as not to get jammed in a wheel or in a turntable etc.
You are better to have things like drain pipe on the floor, so you can run it over rather than rumble it, or get something jammed under the vehicle.
Driving cones are the shape they are so they cannot get caught in a spoked wheel.

agree re the poles , very versatile, we have them set into small tyres so we can move them round........
wise words wally .... need be safe above all.
I tend to also "adorn" mine with anything colourful I can find. ....and wavy things ............. some courses might have flags/ floral displays / jumping fillers ( oh yes and use the jumps as obstacles too :D).
We do le trec as well so all sorts things like wheely bins, tractors waiting around ( well I borrowed one for a wee while :D), scarecrow things, , plastic curtain "strings" for doors, bundles of balloons, plastic bins ....... anything and everything is liable to be "seconded" to our practice area :)
as to le trec
not that many of them round so you need to travel unless you can persuade locals to put one on.
the link to the bds gives good info ........
it's a fun way of testing that you are safe enough to be out and about on the roads :D as well as having a social outing. You get to see other parts of the countryside, get tips form other drivers ..... and test your driving ability . Its not timed ( well not very often - in the demo we did at three counties last year they put us against the clock on the last day to make it entertaining for the crowd )..... and some folk think that horses should be in the trot all the time in the obstacle section ( its not times in the same way however as in driving trials as its marks out of 10 for style that count !!!!! )

Young Jackson has the answer to the scary floral display! Much to the embarassment of Frances at Strathallan! EAT IT! sorts the problem once and for all!

Thanks every one, lots of fantastic ideas here. DH is going to be kept very busy making such things. We will be very sure that they are ultra safe though. Any one got pictures of home made ones that have used?
