Hi. This is a question to those that are in the knowledge about jumping at shows!! ;)

I intend to jump my pony this year in some local shows, but am petrified of entering an actual 'competition'!!
So, far i've only managed to brave a ride once at a show, in a clear round!! :o
(I always chicken out and usually leave my saddle at home! lol!)

Anyhow, i have a couple of questions and would be grateful if you guys could help me out! Please!!

~ does anyone have any tips about memorizing a course?!
~ after the bell goes, signalling you can start your round, is there a time limit that could incur penalties if you don't make it through the start within this time?
~ if you go clear and go into a jumpoff, when do they tell you the course, and do you get a chance to walk the jumpoff course before you begin?
~ What does "two phase jumping" mean?
~ Is there anything else i should know?!!

Thanks! :)

hey,i no nerves are awful but make sure you dont make your horse nervous! you can ride a lap or 2 before you jump after the bell to settle yourself dont be too long its unfair on the other riders! you should start with a newcomers class of 60cms or 2ft4ish most people know its your 1st show and they leave you make a few mistakes!! id leave the jumpoffs till you get confidence at a steady pace!! being prepared helps ease nerves so make a list and bring your saddle! ask yourself why your nervous, are you ready for a show is your horse?? you,ll realise its a fear of the unknown,so go to some shows and get some experience you,ll love it!! GOOD LUCK!!!!! Let me no how you get on!!:D:):D:):D:):D

Hiya, to answer your questions:
Walk the course and watch the horses that go before you do their rounds. I find that works best. Once you have watched a few the fences will become familiar to you. Dont drink alcohol the night before. If I have a glass or 3 of wine the night before its a nightmare trying to remember the course.:o
There is no time limit
You can walk the jump off course. Its usually similar to the first round course, they take out some fences to make the course tighter (but you dont have to race round at break neck speed, just take your time until you get more confident).
Dont forget not to cross your tracks once you have gone past the start. Most importantly just enjoy it!:D

I am terrible at remembering courses. I walk it twice, then go round in my head a few times. I then watch a few other horses, including the 2 before I go in. I still sometimes get mixed up!

There is sometimes a time limit on starting - it doesnt do any harm to ask on the day.

I have never been given the opportunity to walk a jump off course before! the course is usually given out just before, so if youre first in it can be difficult! Just take it slow at first though.

No idea what 2 phase jumping is, sorry.

two phase showjumping
a course of jumps is set up say for example there was 12 jumps if you jumped all up to number 7 clear then you would carry on and jump the next 5 jumps but these would be timed. it's like your first round and jumpoff in one.
does this make sense?

Make sure you walk the course about 2 times, so then you get the course going around you head. (watch a couple before you actually jump)

There is a time limit to starting the course once the bell has gone, you have 30secs to start, if not you get eliminated (I think, I just trot around, then canter until the bell goes & jump!)
No, they dont let you walk the jump off course, because they set up the timing equipment, and if you walk through it, it will start the timing!, plus you should remember!
Two phase jumping means that you have to jump about 8-9 jumps, and if you jump them clear, you jump the rest of the course, another 4-5 jumps, If you dont go clear over the first few jumps a bell will go and you have to leave the arena.

Hope that helps :)

i think the rules have changed about the time limit now for all competitions? its 45 secs, and if you go over this, the time for your jumping round starts, so your more likely to get time faults..
Dont worry about that though, its ample of time!

just go and enjoy yourself, dont think of it as a competiton...your all there to enjoy yourself..as soon as you've dome it once, i am sure you will be hooked! :D

I memorise the course by remembering the order of the coulours or types of fence.

You normally have to jump the first fence withing I minute after the bell has gone, you may get eliminated otherwise.

They normally have the jump off courese written down some where, if not they will tell you when everyone has completed the first round. You can't normally walk the jump off course.

Two phase junmping is like the first round and jump off in one course.

Nothing else exept dont turn circles it is classed as refusing or croosing tracks.:D
