Hi,

My mare has extra high withers but she is also extra extra wide. Any suggestions on saddles? im thinking about treeless as all the treed saddles i have tried fall backwards because of her exaggerated dipped back - but i dont have any experience with treeless saddles and dont really know where to start!

many thanks
Julie

Hi

Have you had a look at synthetic saddles and maybe fitting a breastplate??

If a normal saddle is slipping back a tree-less will do it more I think.

There are lots of Hi-witherd saddles available. A breastplate will sort the slipping to.

Do you have any side on pictures of your horse so we can see her back profile? What activities do you do/want to do with her?

Hi,

she is at present off work due to recovery from an injury, but it shouldnt be too long before she can begin being brought back in to work. She will be used for just gentle hacking probably by my mum whos a beginner (no jumping at all, and no fast work).

The leather saddle i have for her doesnt slip (as such) it falls backward so that the pommel is really high and the cantle is really low (because of her really high withers and dipped back). Before she injured herself i was riding her with a pad underneath to lift it up - which worked but it is still generally a bit narrow for her, but any wider and it will prob fall onto her withers.

I prefer synthetics, i have a wintec 2000 for my other horse, i was looking for something that would be lighter for her.

I will take some photos today and post them sometime in the next few days.

I might try the wintec on her and see if that is any better (only bought it recently).

Many thanks
Julie

Try a thorowgood High wither saddle with a thorowgood numnah/saddlepad, which has a grippy underside and will help stop the saddle from slipping in any direction.

I have recently had a new saddle for my mare who matches that description. It is an albion K2 GP. It was pricey but worth it as it should last her a while.

A good saddler is invaluable too.

Rio fits that description and a Saddle Co GP works very nicely on her, with the added bonus of being able to adjust it for width.

Hi all,

I have finally got around to uploading photos, as you can see she is rather wide and has very dipped withers. I will look at the saddles that you guys have recommended.

Many thanks

She appears to have got a lot of muscle wastage in the saddle area, make sure any saddle fitter you get out knows how to fit to the shape she will be when the muscle regenerates, not to the shape she is now.

She ought to be easier to fit a saddle to once she's rebuilt the missing muscle.

If your budget can stand it a WOW can supposedly be fitted to any shape horse. They're also superbly comfortable & I now hate riding in anything else!

You should also get her some massage to help her muscle wastage as it will improve the dippyness on her back.

Hi - you mare looks to me as if poor saddle fit /incorrect riding have caused her problem - I don't mean this as a crticism as have similar problem myself!
Try a trial of the Torsion 'Soft', but send them some photos first (may not give enough clearance over wither)- the staff at Torsion are also v helpful. Make sure that any saddle you use is not pressing on back of shoulder blade - in other words are you trying to place saddle too far forward?
