my friend has a tb with quite brittle hooves she is feeding him bio-tin, and he has special hoof creme, he has quite bad cracks in his hoofs, and Anj thinks it may be impacted heels.
something to help impacted heels are egg bar shoes.
we don;t know much about them, but was wondering what they where like, do they stop you doing things like jumping?
all help appriciated very much

I used to ride a horse with these, he was a total git to jump but that was just him, not the shoes- I did eveything with him, no special treatment, just have to scoop out the dirt instead of scraping it off, adding about an extra 1 second per hoof so nothing to worry about:) I was under the impression (what I was told by my RI) that they were to improve the circulation in the hoof and up the leg by applying pressure- this may be a load of rubbish, I don't know.
This article may help? http://www.hoofcare.com/archives/egg_bar_seminar.html
I know my post is not very helpful, but I did jump with them on- only on the front if I remember rightly did this horse have them- normal shoes on the back....

They are often used in case of navicular disease and "navicular-like symptoms" to support the hoof

I wouldn't automatically assume that. However I've seen top level SJ'ers jumping in eggbars so it's clearly not a hindrance. However jumping a horse with knackered feet doesn't seem like a great idea to be honest considering the forces involved.

Gaetano is in egg bar shoes, he has them as he has DJD in both front fetlocks and he has lost flexion in his pasterns. The egg bars support the pastern and help with the DJD. The whole hoof has to be changed on shape, toes taken back further to change the breakover point.
My farrier would go mad if I jumped in them but as we dont jump there is not a problem. Egg bars are very difficult to keep on as the protude from the back of the foot. Gaetano has lost them on a regular basis in the field and in now on box rest as if he pulls another one off there will not be enough foot left to nail it back to.
I suggest she speaks to her farrier but I would not recomed them if the horse has that poor feet, one slip in the field and they would be off.

I am fairly certain, but may be wrong, but if you have contracted heels, you won't need an egg or heart bar shoe. you'll want to encourage the heels to expand, not be fixed in place with a bar shoe.

I just ensure my mare has over reach boots on as they can clip the shoes as they go all round the foot but apart from that and the picking out mentioned earlier in thread, not much else to add
