View Full Version : Will she turn really light grey?

At my work experience there's this gorgeous steel/rose? grey filly who I adore and am actually looking into buying when she retires (hard to explain, I can just sort of feel this connection between us, it sounds crazy I know, but it's real.)
She's 3 now (race horse) and this shade of grey. I'm wondering if she'll lighten to really light grey/flea bitten grey at all? I know they lighten with age but is it likely she'll stay quite dark?

I posted a similar thread a while back about P - she's blue & white, I love her colour. According to Chev she will bleach out, it's a 100% certainty - the genetics at play in grey horses means the pigment producing cells are gradually killed off, so eventually they go white although the rate at which this happens varies. Don't know if it's any different for a rose grey, but I think not.

Theres a dutch warmblood on the RS that was fading out of this colour when he came, hes now steel grey and going lighter....its a shame really.

Yes, she will get lighter and lighter. Horses do grey out at different rates; some will be white by six, others might still be dapple grey in their teens, but all greys will end up white (as long as they live that long). Some go fleabitten; others don't. My sec A mare was already completely white when we bought her as a six year old; she's now eleven and still white. Gelfy is darker but well on the way to white; he's a couple of years older.

Curly - yeah it's fab, and I'm probably gonna help out a few mornings a week in the sumer holidays so I can keep track of Tremelo (the filly) because I want to buy her when she retires. xD
And thanks everyone, I was just wondering whether it would be more likely whether she'd stay dark grey longer because she's 3 and still so dark. Hard to imagine her all white now!

Ooo go for it!!! I love the time i spend at the racing yard, do they let you ride out? Its hard when you get attached to one in particular tho....mine was a chestnut gelding with 4 white socks and a blaze...i loved him. I can keep in touch with his owners but i dont - it hurts. Hes changed apparently and id rather remember him how he was.

Hehe def gonna hang round there, I almost cried saying bye to her earlier.
But don't think I'd be able to afford her when she retires - she was sold as a yearling for £26,000. She's had 2 starts, won her maiden but didn't place in the other. Aaand for her lines, she's out of Kapria and by Trempolina. If that means anything to any of you?
