Just wondered if anyone has taken theirs recently?

If you have, did you notice any areas that the examiners are particularly focussing on at the moment, especially on the Care / SM side?

Got mine coming up in the next couple of weeks and want to be as prepared as possible. :)

I did the training for mine 2 years ago but I decided my riding just wasnt up to it.

The care is also a big leap from stage 2-what with the muscles, I couldnt get my head round them!!

Good luck-where are you taking it at??

I'm taking it in Dorset. :)

I should have really done it a while ago and I've been a bit rubbish about the whole thing. I did my Stages 1 & 2 a few years ago but haven't really got my backside in gear to do this till now.

My trainer's told me that I should have done my PTT already, so this is a big goal for me.

I'm certainly not feeling confident, quite the opposite actually especially around the Care side!!!:o

You'll be perfectly fine! If i can pass my 2, you can pass your 3 easily! :D

Once youve done it you can then tell us all what to be worried about! :p:p

i did my care in october and riding in may. i would say for the care read the stage 3 book from top to bottom and know all of it! plus a bit more. they are always hot on lungeing and you can fail just on that. i know i have posted this before but my friend failed one week and passed it 2 weeks later. a lot of it is luck and the mood the examiners are in that day, good luck!
make sure you know all the ailments especially the legs.

I don't mean to hyjack the thread so feel free to tell me off if this question seems to. However, I curious, what are the stages and how do they differ from BHS teaching qualifications?

The Stages are the Riding and Care parts of the teaching qualification. The lowest level of instructor will have stages 1 , 2 and 3 in Riding and Care and the Preliminary Teaching Test. With the addition of other certificates in First Aid and Child Protection and a portfolio of experience they become a BHSAI

how many hours teaching is it now to become an AI?

It isn't that simple : you now have to prepare a portfolio of experience including specified groups of lessons, lesson plans, lesson summaries, follow up plans etc. which are checked and verified by an examiner

Our initial view is that it is more difficult and looks really hard to do unless you are working at a training centre as the range of client lessons required will be difficult for freelancers and people in small RS or livery yards.

I have a lady about to start training for PTT so hopefully we will be much more clear soon :o

In raw figures it's 500 hours of registered teaching experience.

If you teach at a BHS 'Where To Train' Centre then this figure is halved to 250 hours. :)

But yes, there's slightly more to it, including Health & Safety at Work and Child Protection certificate etc.

Sorry Bananaman you are out of date that has all now changed in line with the UK coaching Certificate requirements. I wish it was the old systen I understood that!!!

Ooops, looks like I am... It can't have been changed that long ago can it???

Having said that, I did my 1 & 2 when they still told you the result on the day :p:o

Me too

But apparently candidate started attacking examiners

I don't think many people understand the new system :D

Basically its a bit like what is going on in mainstream schools..prepare lesson plans for a prescribed group of pupils, do feedback reports over a series of lessons and then modify lesson plans etc etc.

I am sorry I am a great BHS exam fan but I really don't think this new system reflects the reality of teaching riding....as I am often heard to say.."well they told me never to work with children and animals" :D

Well it was yesterday...

I was lucky to ride 4 really nice horses and I was pretty happy with how the riding went. My right shoulder seemed to behave itself and stay back and down on the flat, my hands seemed to be working in the SJ and I didn't 'lift' the horse over any of the fences.

I'm not really happy with my care. The first part of the practical was ok and theory was fine, but I feel that I wasn't exactly shining in the lunging side. I had a bit of a nightmare with my sidereins, which wasn't exactly helpful... I had a couple of memory complete blockages around the tendons in the lower leg too in that phase.

The results will be through next week, so will just have to see how it all went.

Following on from what you said eml, I spoke to the Chief Examiner afterwards and apparently an examiner was assaulted in Ireland last week.

I didn't know anyone was allowed to really watch the examination, let alone video it? I suppose you can't really prevent people spectating from a distance especially with an outdoor arena, but pretty much everyone was kept a distance at mine... Thank God!!! :o

I talked to my trainer about the hours side of things as my main problem is that I'm in other full-time employment and therefore getting my teaching hours would be a nightmare. She said that given the amount of teaching that I've done already, that I could submit a portfolio of work and have my requirement reduced. I looked on the BHS website and there's obviously some work in getting a portfolio of that sort together, but should be worth it.

Just wondering....

Would this new system of hours relate to me..I received my log book for my 500hrs 2 years ago when I did my PTT, which I have done easily. BUT so far failed the riding part of stage 3 twice so havent submitted it yet.

Not sure, you really need to ask the BHS but there is nothing to stop you doing your 500 hours without your Stage 3 so I suspect get on with it quickly is the answer as it is much easier!!

Well Done at long last ;)

I don't think anyone had time to watch even from a distance.

I'm really thrilled that you can achieve Stage 3 without working in the industry. Gives me something to aspire to, but not sure about the riding :D
