Chev, I do apologise as you probably hate these sorts of threads!

Theres a high chance that we'll breed our chestnut mare to a silver dapple stallion. The mare definatley carries the silver dapple gene (in summer she turns very silver dapple, in winter she is chestnut with flaxen). I know the stallion well and he has produced silver dapple babies. But I don't know if either are homozygous etc.

Just wondered on rough idea of the chances of getting a silver dapple out? Or are we fighting a losing battle to a chestnut?!

Thanks!

Silver dapple is not expressed on chestnut they can carry it, but it does not show. The fact your chestnut mare shows dapples in the summer is likely due to her nutritional condition and is nothing to do with colour.

Are you planning to send her to Columbus?

Your mare has:
33.3 % chance of a chestnut
25 % silver dapple
25 % silver bay
8.33 % bay
8.33 % black

This is approximate as I do not know if the stallion is hetero or homozygous for Silver dapple.

If Heterozygous:

33.33% - Chestnut
16.67% - Silver dapple
16.67% - Silver Bay
16.67% - Black
16.67% - Bay

If Homozygous:

33.34% - Silver dapple
33.34% - Silver Bay
33.33% - Chestnut

Columbus being the only silver dapple stallion at stud.....

The silver dapple gene only dilutes black pigment, so the best chance of breeding a silver dapple foal is to send a black mare to him;)

Go sherlock!

We're not worried about colour, confirmation and temprement are far more important....it would just be nice to have a silver dapple baby :D

And Columbus is absolutely yummy in every respect!

Sadly my mare has declined to come into season, so my Icelandic foal dreams will not happen,:(

Awwww :( Thats all this is at the moment - a dream. But I thought I'd start looking at some of the practicalities associated with icelandic foal babies just in case....any excuse to look at pictures of them really ;)

Smari's stallion Dropi is also fabulous and as he is dun-based has the prosepect of getting some pretty coloured babies too. He is also a good performance stallion with a lovely temperament but that is generally the Icelandic way.

Nott was going to Dropi...

Awwww :(

I'm not even sure if our mare will go to a stallion...so I don't even think I should be planning her first baby too much, let alone her second!
