I decided I wanted to make my jumps scary so that if me and D ever come across something wierd in the jumping ring we wont have too many or any issues. If anyone knows of other things I can do let me know. I tied some plastic bags under one of the other jumps. Then I left some garlin flaping under one of the jumps and D jumped them great!! He tried to eat the shiny garlin lmao!

the other thing is to prepare for random things happening...one of my friends had a big issue b/c she was doing a jump right next to the rail, and a woman was standing there with an open umbrella..now my trainer has us jumping w/ people standing near the jump holding various things and moving around (okay, not exactly scary jumps, but connected)

that works for me :D maybe we can even put an umbrella under the jump?? I think I'll try to make a video of me & a friend going over the scary jumps :D that would be fun :D.

Funny coloured and patterned things - we have a number of funny-patterned fillers at our yard, and they tend to be the things that really bother the horses. We have a bright pink peacock filler, and one with Union Jacks on, and those two seem to be the worst for upsetting them.
Umbrellas sound great, but do make sure they are well-secured - wouldn't want you or horse to get hurt!

Jump a wheelbarrow with a canvas rug over it.
I would say that that is actually really dangerous and the horse could get his leg stuck and if he lands on it is likely to do some damange- the same for tyres actually unless they are threaded around a pole of some sort.
You could just leave the rug/tarp. draped over a normal jump (weighted down of course!!) Also traffic cones, are good as fillers/scary wings (weight them). if you're feelign adventurous and it's possible you could dig a small ditch, and either have a pole over it and just have a plain ditch or, line with tarp. and fill with water for a makeshift water jump!! :)

This isn't a jumping idea, but its pretty good to get your horse used the unusal.
i put a small blanket down on the ground and have my horse walk over it.
This took a couple of tries before my horse finally accepted it!

Another tip my friend suggested to me was to buy some really colourful duvets colours from charity shops (you know the ones no-one wants and you can get for a couple of quid) and drape them over jumps as they look like really scary fillers and aren't dangerous to land on or anything. CHeapy plastic plant pots with really cheesy fake flowers in are good too.

Sorry meant duvet covers not colours - Doh!

I'm a nervous jumper as it is, so don't fancy facing anything scarier than a bog standard jump if i'm honest! :D
But i'm going to have to say, aswell as the wheelbarrow idea, the plastic bags are a really potentially dangerous thing to use for more than one reason. If the plastic bag was to fly off, it could spook the horse, or it could fly straight into the horse's face. Also if the horse caught the jump as it jumped the plastic bag could get caught round hooves and legs.
I think the wheelbarrow danger speaks for itself.

Oh the plastic bags are secured down so they can't fly away but can make some noise if the wind is blowing. I'm planing on geting an adapter for my video camra and make a movie of us trying all of these jumps and then I will post it on here!! :D sound like a fun idea?
Sonnet - I've been thinking about the water ditch idea as well :D. I've had a few ideas of what to try and I'll be sure to film all the jumps. It's about 110 outside right now so I don't plan on going outside other than to check water buckets. So later tonight (even if I don't have to adapter) I'll try to make eac jump and get a friend to film me and D over them. It might be more fun to watch me and my TB mare over them LOL i'm not so suicidel right now though :D LOL anymore ideas? I'm going to write them all down and do my best to make each one. I'm not sure what to do about the wheelbarrow one.... You think maybe if I put one under an already made pole jump? I of course wouldn't want to do something that could hurt Dartanion or me....

get hold of some flurescent yellow and orange jackets - horses have limited colour vision so reflective stuff can really catch them out. drape jackets over poles too. cones are really good as mentioned above.

I just got back from town and no one has the cord I need so I'm hoping later tonight when it's darker I am going to try and film the jumps with my web cam. I will also film them with the video camra because I think I can order my cord online or else borrow one form my boyfriend. :D :D keep the ideas comeing :D ok so no wheel barrow ok :D

I want to say I am VERY VERY happy with D and the umbrella "test" You will all see what I mean. If I left out any jumps don't worry I will do my best to make them soon :D. More suggestions always welcome!!!

I'm at school so can't see the video :(
However do watch what you use (I'm not sure what you have used, so this is not a direct critiscism but more a general post for anyone else looking).
Anything that the horse could land on (covers and rugs) can be dangerous as they can slip or get tangled in.
We used to use boxes, or tip our grooming kits under jumps to make them colourful. Get tree branches to make a "brush". Coats and jackets laid on the floor are ok, as long as they're rolled quite thinly.
Hmmm will put my thinking cap on for you!

THNX everyone!!! I love D so so much, I never really "made" him calm, we baught him as a western trail horse when he was 7 (he's 10 now) and he's pretty much been a mellow guy since I baught him. I honestly didn't think I would even get that much jump out of him with the umbrella LOL!! so I know he's alive and not totally dead LOL!! He's such a good boy and works really hard. OH! and all the jumps were our first time over each one no practice runs before the camra was on. I did show him each jump and he just didn't seem interested in any of them LOL!! THNX for all the good comments (i'll give D some extra carrots for everyone) :D oh and CER1389 don't worry we didn't use anything that could have really hurt him other than possible knocking down a pole or something? I REALLY want to try the umbrella.... :D hehe thnx again everyone. OH OH last thing I promise :D:D I also LOVE linkin park hehe

your horse looks so unfazed! i tried to get my horses used to an umbrella ONCE, i barely got it open and they were running for the hills (they were loose) and when it comes to jumping, mine throw a hissy fit when it goes from a normal cross to a straight. your horse is the opposite!
Well done and good luck with other jump ideas you'll be trying. :)

My buddy Cara says he's so mellow because he trusts me and loves me, I believe he loves me and I know he trusts me (he must to go over those jumps) but I also think he's a really mellow guy.... yea I don't give myself credit for a lot lol. Other than I baught him as a western horse and taught him to jump :D yay go me.

Bless him he's so unfussed isn't he? Great jump ideas...at the moment all i've got is dressage marker cones under a jump, and some branches under another, very boring.
