In desperate need of advice...

A friend's horse - A reccently aquired, young Thoroughbred Mare, usually fit and healthy, loves food, loves people, lives out 24hours a day, has the best of everything including paddock mates, rugs and human friends....... has been very ill for quite some time.

A few weeks ago she had a bad case of colic (almost lost her) and it's been downhill ever since.

This mare has lost severe amounts of weight, is depressed, miserable, has gone completely off her feed (highly unusual for this horse!), is tired and worn out all the time.... greatly lacking stamina.

The vets haven't found anything as yet....... she's being fed huge amounds of supplements and she's still loosing weight.

Does anyone have any ideas?? Has anyone experienced anything like this??

Could she have Ross River Fever? Or??

Winter is starting to set in over here in Australia..... We desperately need some answers. Can anyone help??

Hi Ame,
Im in th Uk so I dont know much about this Ross River Fever sorry, but surely this would show up in any blood tests your vet has done as would any thing else....Im assuming blood tests have been done ??. Aso Urine and faeces samples too !!
All I can suggest really is small amounts of feed, little and often to keep the gut balanced and flowing.
It may be the mare is having trouble with absorbing the feed you are giving her after the gut flora was imbalanced after the colic upset.
I hope you get this sorted Ame , keep us all posted ok !!
