View Full Version : Bruised hooves?

Noticed today that Flyer has some bruising around the bottom edge of his hoof wall on all four hooves. I've never noticed it before, he is shod on all four feet, he isn't lame or sore, but I find it odd that it has suddenly appeared? He is not currently in much work (due to nobody to hack with), being hacked out 5 times per week max, normally around 30mins of roadwork, all walk maybe 1-2mins of trot. He was last shod around 3 weeks ago.

Anyone have any ideas what could have caused it?

Don't have a pic ATM (phone battery died on me:rolleyes:), but yes, a red patch in the hoof wall. Looks a little like the pic in this thread (http://www.newrider.com/forum/showthread.php?t=113345&highlight=bruised+feet), but right on the bottom edge of the hoof wall. He has more than one on each hoof.

He doesn't seem at all bothered by them, but I have never noticed him having them before:confused:

my horses are not shod but i have had that sort of colouring in both their feet. my gelding got a read patch when i was jumping him and he banged the pole  no lameness or heat but it did discolour his hoof. my mare tripped badly and hit her hoof on some stones and she has a red patch at her heel.
is he turned out 24/7 and maybe been galloping round the field?
it seems weird that they are on each hoof... that would be my main concern but if there is no lameness then i wouldn't be too worried. surely its a bit like if we get a blood blister under our nail... it hurts initially when the bang causing it occurs but soon after it isn't sore but looks painful.

He is out 24/7, but we've had so much rain recently that we have very soft ground in the field. I did think perhaps it was down to stones, or maybe even the fencing, but it seems odd that he has is in all four?

Since he is not lame or sore now, perhaps it is bruising that is 'old', which has only became visible?

Never worry about it, if he's sound and the pink is low down don't panic.

Thanks Wally. There are several bricks in amongst the mud at the gateway of the field, so think they've come from tripping over them.
