How about having a few lessons to make sure you are getting your position correct and keeping the horse balanced etc. Once you've got the basics right, a lot of it is practice.

I think I can give you a few ideas. :p I'm a new person to jumping, and I only get one lesson a week...which leaves six days of 'what to do to get better?'. If you have access to a shared/loan or your own horse, bareback work is fantastic for balance. Flatwork is always good, too--transitions from halt to walk, to trot, to canter, from walk to canter (this is what you're aiming for), and work on being light with your hands. It's much easier to do jumping when your horse is comfortable at its paces and is happy with you on its back. If you don't feel like you're up to bareback riding, do stirrupless workouts--focusing on heels down, toes up, leg position, the line from your ankle to your hip to your shoulders. Stretch on your horse. Reach for his/her ears, than back to his dock, reach for your left toe than your right, do arm circles, and things like that.
Another thing you could do is practice two-point, which is when also called jumping position. You can do it at the walk, trot, and canter. I'm not experienced enough to explain it to you, but if you look it up, I'm positive you'll find it. Another big thing to practice is the release. At the beginning you work with a crest release, and as you progress I'm sure your RI will tell you when to start on a more advanced release.
Hope that helps a little. :D But also, practice practice PRACTICE is essential. I see people jump on their horses once a week and just ride, and although they might progress...very slowly, everyone gets better when they practice and practice correctly.;)
These are some pictures of me and my TB gelding-- I tried to pick some of at least 'acceptable' jumping position. Hope it gives you a bit of an example of 'basic' jumping position with a crest release. GOOD LUCK!!

Gonna keep my eye on this one. Jumped mine for the first time last month, put about a 2ft pole up, nothing scarey, he had lunged over much bigger previously. Jumped lots as a kid at local shows won the open jumping at that time. I thought like riding a bike you dont forget. HA!! Went in to it lined him up, nice and steady..........oh he jumped it......... he jumped the wing all 4 1/2 ft of it. My balance went completely, stirrups clapped at the back of my saddle, he crapped himself (why is my momma lying on my neck???) took off bucking and galloping. Needless to say boy did i fall off.
Not jumped since on his back. He is clearing up to 5ft on the lunge at the moment and I know I will never be able to do it on him, Gutted!
Yet I still get so excited watching him, get goosebumps and tears that sort of feeling.I'm wierd I know. I didn't help you at all on your question but thought you might feel a bit better that it could be worse. Keep practising The pics look great, Vicky.
