Been thinking of having road nails put in as I do alot of hacking, and half of it is roadwork, even tho quiet country roads.
Tara slipped a couple of times last week coming down the hills and I thought road nails might help, but have never used them before
so what are you thoughts, is there any drawbacks to using them? Does it 'unbalance' in anyway?
Any thoughts much appreciated :D
never again

my old horse used to have road nails put it.
I never felt he was unbalanced or anything felt wierd but from what I can remember- they need to just get used to it as some may tip-toe untill they balance, but after this they are fine!
I also found they made the shoe wear down less too. I liked them.

do you mean the little metal points in the shoe themselves for grip?
we have those and they are very good. they scramble a little until the hooky point finds a crack to latch onto on the tarmac and then they are fine!
not too expensive compared to ordinary shoes either! a euro extra i think we pay the farrier!

Yeh thats the ones, apparantly they go on the outside of the front shoes, and only 50p each extra :p
I'm going to get the farrier to put some in on thursday, she's not due to be shod, so do you think it would still be ok to put them in now ?
She had these shoes on 2 weeks ago

the ones we have are actually part of the shoe. like a little metal point on the flat surface of the shoe that would be on the ground?

i use road nails ie tungsten nails every time his feet are done, i could not hack out without them, certainly help with the grip no slipping:)

We got titan(sp) pins in pinnochio to stop the skating on the road. Fantastic

oh, now I am a little  is there different kind of nails then??
Will I need to tell the farrier which ones I want?

I asked my farrier for road nails for Joy about 4 months back.
They are 2 raised nails on each of her back feet.
She didn't need to get used to them and we don't slip at the back anymore.
I wanted them because everytime she slipped I tensed and that made her tense as she is green and needs a relaxed and chilled rider to inspire confidence in her.
The road nails not only stopped the slipping but also kept me the confident rider she needs so were well worth the money :)

Ive always used tungsted tipped nails for hunting but now after a really bad fall at the beginning of the year everything that hacks out has them in, usually in the hinds, it is totally unsuitable for no shoes as they skate without anything at alll, believe me ive tried both, i am totally against shoes on ponies but mine have them on so they can hack.

Road nails are just fancy nails, road studs are those little tiny things sticking out near the heel on the actual shoe.

You can buy the tungsten cores and put them in the shoes.
I have little tungsten rods that I hammer into a holes I drill into the shoe. 2 per hind shoe, one each side.
Road nails, tipped nails, call them what you will should go in the back shoes and one each side to stop the hoof twisting as they put it down.
I have had the Devils own game getting no. 2 tipped nails for the Shetlands so that's why I resorted to putting them in the actual shoe.
They are really very good.
