We had some previous discussion on New Rider about high viz in the USA, that it may be less common than here in the UK? And how here in the UK, I and others were reluctant to wear our high viz in the summer because it is too hot.
OH and I on holiday discovered that American high viz is cool.
The first we saw was a Wrangler in a National Park in Wyoming showing strings of riders across the busy road. Her waistcoat (vest) was made of mesh, like the net party frocks. She told me it was called a flagging vest.

We went to a Rodeo in Montana when the temperature was well over 90 degrees F. and mounted car parking attendants wore those same flagging vests.

I dont know who these guys are in the 14 July Parade - again a blistering hot day and still wearing high viz.

In the USA it seems anyone doing any sort of official safety job has summer weight high viz, and that we in the UK lag a long way behind.

If anyone knows of this stuff on sale in the UK perhaps they could post?

I'm not sure about on sale in the UK but I know over here in Europe they were making a fuss about reflective vests in cars. It's compulsory for more and more countries when you cross over the border.

I bought one of these fluorescent/reflective safety car vests for the equivalent of a couple of pounds and they are great when riding on the road (I'm the only rider in the area who bothers to wear reflectives whenever I ride on the road though ...) Only problem is that they are one-size so a little on the big side but hey, I'd rather that than have a driver claim that they didn't see me !

Hi Skib, lovely pics, again, looks like a great trip.

Interesting stuff about hi-viz gear in the States. The vests look great, personally not a big fan of orange but the material seems spot on - particularly as it is so lightweight.

Funny how they all wear hi-viz and no safety hats...
