i wondered if vaccs experts could tell me if Kaiser is all up to date on his vaccs. i think he is though.

He was born 21/05/03

13/07/03 - influenza
13/07/03 - tetanus
12/12/03 - inlfluenza + tetanus
02/01/07 - duvaxyn plus T
08/02/07 - duvaxyn plus T

Or do you think it would be best to give the vet a call and make sure everything is in order. Just wanted any opinions on here first.

Hi Jenni
I'm not a vaccination expert! But the manufacturers' recommended schedule for tetanus is:

Primary course: two injections 21-92 days apart
First booster: within 365 days of second injection
Following boosters: once every 2-5 years

Influenza has three separate sets of recommendations:

Manufacturers:

Primary course: two injections 28-42 days apart
First booster: 168 days after primary injection
Following boosters: annually within 365 days of previous booster

FEI:

Primary course: two injections 21-92 days apart
Boosters: annually within 365 days of second primary injection

Jockey Club:

Primary course: two injections 21-92 days apart
First booster: within 150-215 days of second primary injection
Following boosters: annually within 365 days of previous boost

The FEI and the Jockey Club state that injections cannot be given in the seven days before a competition. And many shows/competitions will check a horse's influenza vaccinations right back to the primary vaccination.

(Taken from Getting Horses Fit by Sarah Pilliner and Zoe Davis)

So if you just want to hack, you'd be ok with (for example) a flu jab one year, then a combined flu and tet jab the next year. Some people leave it longer and some people don't vaccinate at all.

But if you want to compete or do shows where they are likely to check, then his vaccination schedule is not correct because he should have had a second jab for flu and tet no later than 12th October 03 (I think... I'm adding up on a calendar with very small lines!) and then jabs for flu every year after that (for the FEI rules which apparently is what most shows go by, if they are going to check at all).

It's all quite confusing really :(

hi,

i'd say he isnt as like explained above with all the timescales he doesnt seem to hav had enough injections to keep the course going (wrong phrasing;))

best bet would be to ask your vet though...more bills:D
