Hi all. Fleur went lame on friday afternoon, after the farrier had been.

She came in from the field very pottery, unable to turn properly :( It wasnt nice to watch. Thing is, this is the 2nd time its happened.

I realise that some horses do go a bit foot sore after the farrier but Fleur is the kind of horse that stays sound unless theres a big problem. She's been lame 3 times in the 3 years I've owned her, twice due to the farrier.

Anyway, the farrier out (the main boss one, it was one of his under farriers that had done her) he thought it could be nail bind, def not nail prick as no blood. But he also said it could be mechanical laminitis. He removed the 2 front shoes and replaced them with shorter nails in, she was no better.

However yesterday and today she is alot better, can walk almost normal in straight lines and is finding it easier to turn. So I was wondering, if it has just been a bad case of nail bind, how long should it go on for? Like a maximum before we start to say that its possibly lami?

Thanks all

Did you keep her off the grass in the interim? Mild laminitic symptoms have been rife with the mild wet weather this summer, one of my horses has been up and down with it, although she's never had full blown laminitis before. She's barefoot so it shows up instantly. There's no reason to think shod horses are immune to the same thing, it just doesn't show up so easily, and would be pretty bad by the time it did. If the lameness is worse following a period on grass and accompanied by raised digital pulses then that will possibly be your culprit.

Yes, she's been kept in since friday, with limited turnout in the arena.

Shes on a bare paddock with a muzzle on so its not like she's allowed to pig out on grass, although she is thhat type of pony.

She seems alot better today, still not sound when turning on hard ground though.
