I've not used Borax because I couldn't get it when I needed to soak so used Milton (which makes horseshoes rust... so no good with shoes). But since then I've dealt with a very nice lady from www.barefootbasics.co.uk who sell (among other things) Borax and other things for soaking feet. She was very knowledgeable and I think would be happy to say how much to use etc. if you gave her a call (can't think of her name but it was on the website). She's not the sort of person who's likely to be precious about whether there are shoes on or not btw :) I think they say it's better if you can soak on the day the farrier reshoes, between old ones off and new ones on, to make sure it goes into the bits the shoes normally cover?
eta - her name is Tracy.

Will be interested to hear - by the way where did you get the Borax? As soon as I started to need some, Boots stopped stocking it

Wilkinsons do it but in smaller packs than were in Boots. Some Boots stores do still stock it, I got some from the Meadowhall branch recently.

Oh excellent - looks like it might be worth looking in the household section of my nearest big supermarket :) We don't have Wilkinsons up here?
