Wow! I loved it! It was definatly like riding a bike and i was so surprised how much i remembered, although my muscles and bum didn't and I am paying the price now. I also didn't realise how hard work rising trot is, i was completely out of breath by the end of the lesson.

I was put on a 15hh (ish) cobby typical riding school pony who you wouldn't ever label forward going and now my legs are killing me from the amount of leg i had to use, however he was very good if a little hard work and i felt completely safe and confident. I managed to do walk and trot today and some trotting poles and i even managed to mount from the ground and get off elegantly too. We decided to leave canter for today as I was starting to suffer pain by the end.

The only oproblem now is that they are not sure they do have an adult group still on a weekend and i cannot get up during the week due to the kids and i can't afford private lessons every week, so i might call a few more schools this week and have a chat with them and maybe try them out next weekend as my school has no classes next weekend.

All in all though i am feeling great and it was so good to get back in the saddle again and I'm glad i wasn't scared stiff or had forgotton everything, but now i need a bath and two nurofen.

Sounds like you made a great start. I remeber when I went back to a riding school earlier this year after a crisis of confidence. My legs killed and I now appreciate how lazy having a forward going horse has made me. I can't ride ones that you need to get started!

Sounds great! Probably a good idea to leave the canter until next time - you've done a lot for one lesson (and after a long break too) - my legs would be killing as well! :D
Good luck finding somewhere, the holidays really throw things out don't they!
Keep us updated :)

I can relate to the sore feeling, I tried a horse out yesterday and havent ridden for a little while, so I can sympathise !! Although I'm sure you did a load more work than me !!!! ;)

That's great news, Suzanne! Keep us posted on your progress and..... don't forget we love photos! Yes, even RS riders and horses are not immune from the NR passion for piccies.

Just thought i'd add that i'm impressed!

(Feeling a little intrud...y(?) here, but thought i may as well make a post or two)

I took myself off to Muirhead Stables in Dundee...ish area yesterday and did a trek just to see if returning to lessons was really what i wanted to do. It was! But oh how humiliating....i was lead (despite telling them i was capable) by....an 8 yr old.... And the lassy was very nice and kept insisting on checking i was ok, i assured her i was fine, while gritting my teeth against saying "alot better if i wasn't being led by a kiddy!" But it was fun and yes i too had the rising trot part, which the leading person kept breaking into without any particular warning and my bottom resents my lack of timing. But i did eventually recover my ability and got into it, with much amusement of the kiddies on the trek, as apparently my riding is too "dressagey". I'm not entirely sure what that means....? But i was told something like, i work too hard. Oh well... and i'm going to stop talking now, as i have rambled on long enough!!!

So yes, well done you

Well done you too, El-Ladybug!

I think maybe what they meant by "too dressage-y" was something like I was saying on Skib's thread about trail-riding. Dressage means you want every step to be correct, and you're in control of the horse every minute; trail-riding means you sit there and relax and let the horse get on with it ... Exaggerated, yes - but that's the gist of it, isn't it?:)
