Curlys first actual injury :o (cue mass panic that shes about to explode and die), shes only had 2 over reaching cuts before that even i could deal with without panicing.

Shes got a lump, bit bigger than a marble on her jaw, its hard and about 2/3 of the way down it theres a cut, about 3mm deep and about half a cm long but its full of yellow stuff (pus?). I swear it wasnt there yesterday but i suppose i could have missed it....

Mum (non horsey) thinks shes been stung by something, causing the lump and has itched it and its either popped (but then why is it still hard?) or shes cut it open on something.

She doesnt like it being touched but shes abit headshy anyway, i washed it in hibiscrub and then puffed wound powder on it (couldnt get purple spray near her head) and covered it in vaseline to stop the flies getting in.

Any idea what it could be? I can get a pic if it would help. Its not really worrying or anything but you know how it feels when someting happens :o

Aww no! Poor Curly :(
Sounds like she may have a thorn or something stuck in? Has she had hay that's been extremely sharp and thorny? The yellow stuff is the infection coming out so keep doing what you're doing and if it swells up anymore or gets any worse from what you can see, then perhaps ring the vet for some advice.
Get better soon Curly xxx

How is Curly's lump now?

Was just wondering if the lump could be an abcess? How is she in herself? Does she appear to be under the weather? Runny nose or anything?

Don't like to worry you, but it couldn't be strangles could it? Its just that you said its in the jaw area...

Hopefully I'm wrong, and its all gone now:)

Im ringing the vet tomorrow :( shes getting quite distressed about it being touched, its not got any smaller and i hot compressed it tonight and nothings coming out (i was hoping all the pus would be drawn out). Shes been really lethargic latley but im putting that down to the warm weather.

At least, best case scenario is shes fine and ive wasted £25 call out fee but to be honest i couldnt give two hoots about the money if theres something wrong with the ginger one.

thanks for your concern :)

so do i! Our ODE is on the 28th and im really hoping its nothing sinister but its not normal.

Shes registered with a regular vet but another livery gave me the number of a special horse vet she uses, more expensive but they did a better job. long as someone puts my mind at rest i dont really care if it costs £25 or £250, i dont really have that much money but needs must. ill find it if i need it.

it doesnt stop them but it will stop the creepy buggers getting to the blood to do what they do in open wounds. Blergh.

vet wasnt sure what it was.

Shes got antibiotics, antimflammatories and bute (to kill the pain so i can get to it). If its not gone down in a week or it starts discharging pus then she gots to go have x rays to see if theres a foreign body in it, worst case scenario is that its *gulp* a tumour BUT its VERY unlikely that it is, she recons its an allergic reaction to a fly bite thats shes itiched, cut open and its infected. I coluld have had a biopsy done on it but obv that would open it up for a secondary infection.

we did establish that its not come through from the inside of her mouth.
