Does anyone have a horse who developed mudfever (or cracked heels) in the summer, but whose horse does not get mudfever in the winter?

What barrier product do you find best for preventing mudfever in the winter, and when do you start applying it?

My horse has developed summer mud fever for the first time this year and naturally I am now worried as to whether this will make her more prone to mud fever this winter

Mine can be prone to mudfever year round if the weather conditions are right for it.

I have found the most effective cream is Heal to Hoof, you use it as a barrier and a treatment, rather than pulling scabs off this gets them off for you. :)

My Clydesdale X developed a bit of mud fever this summer. He has lots of feather which usually protects him in the winter but he has moved to a new field and the only route to yard was through a deep trench of mud and muddy water so I am guessing the feathers could not protect him then! I used Naf Mud Guard ointment and found it briliiant. It has cleared up and the heels, which were cracked, are healing now that it is mostly dry. Someone on here mentioned Top Coat by hilton herbs which they said was very effective and so I am going to try that this winter!

Thanks for the suggestions :)

When do you think I should start using a barrier/preventative:confused:

Do you think I should wait to see if she is actually prone to winter mud fever first? She has never had it before (she is 13 years old) and has always lived out 24/7 - but after this first bout of mud fever in the summer, I'm worried about the winter

Don't wait for winter any sign of redness or bad weather slap some on just to be safe, it certainly wont hurt

ROFL. In the UK at the moment, that's every day then isn't it

How often do you think I should apply it? Daily? Twice a day? Or can I get away with less often

That's a definate vote for Heel to Hoof then ;), at the moment I'm still treating her current mudfever and putting Sudocrem on morning and evening. I was dreading having to try and find time to do that through the winter as well!
