My gelding had a nose bleed from his left nostril a few weeks back - it was more than a watery trickle, I'd say, but never gushing and to be honest he wasn't bothered! It went all day from early morning, and by the next morning it had stopped but a very small trickle came out when he had his breakfast.
On Friday I came to find him with the exact same nose bleed. It hadn't stopped a few hours later so I called the vet out who listened to his pulse and lungs, took his temperature, etc and said all was normal. They also took a blood sample so hopefully I'll hear back from that if there's any probs.
He also went on some ACP tablets and anti-biotics.
From what I hear/read it can be a really simple problem or a really dangerous one? Ahhh I don't like this :(
I tell you, the only thing that kept me from totally panicking the other day was the fact he was completely normal in himself.. (and waving his nose at the vet who was wearing cream trousers :D)
Can anyone lend me some support/experiences they've had with this kind of thing?

Funny you should say that, i have had plenty of experience this year. Not to scare you as nosebleeds can be minor or major. So since enfd of Feb fern has had 5 scopes, 3 head xrays and a ct scan, 40 sachets of antibiotics, about a weeks stay at the vets and a referral to rainbow vets. First of all the bleeding came from the lungs but this then created an infection of the guteral pouch. The bleeding kept going so it was a referral to rainbow fr a ct scan this was to see if she had a tuma, well they found a hematoma in her sinus which is now all cleared. So although it can be a worrying time nosebleeds can be nothing or alot. The scope will hopefully show you more.
Any questions just ask

the fact the vet listened to his breathing and lungs and said everything was fine there, makes me think (hope) it's nothing to do with bleeding from the lungs.
she mentioned it could be the capillaries/vessels bursting perhaps, although it's not work induced But it is harvest time around us at the moment so possibly irritation?
I can't remember if anything was happening when he had the first nosebleed.

Yeh fern first of all broke a blood veesels but it bled into the lungs, breaking a blood vessel doest have to be from strenuous work it can br from stress, excitemnent, if they have a weak one it doesnt take much at all plus bleeding into the lungs was the besty result out of the three as the other to guteral puch and ct scan we got warned that this could be fatal, But like i sed there little or big, hope the scope shows you more good luck and let us know

Just wanted to say good luck with the scope. We had our Joe scoped last year he had a sinus infection that wouldn't clear up. Fingers crossed that you get to the bottom of things.

Good luck with the scope. Peter had this problem shortly after I bought him. he too had the scope and it is a worry but as you say it could be nothing. Peter was in fact a thoat infection. he was really left to get on with it. No anitbiotics or anything

Well had the scope and the vet says he has an Ethmoid Haematoma, which is a form of tumor :(
It's treatable, but he said he'd have to go down to Oakham Vets (Newmarket is too far away) to have it injected, etc etc.
He said they'd keep him in for 48 hours to see if it had been killed off, although I've read a few things online and none of them seem to have reacted that quickly
will research more..!
Got so much to sort out now. Have to call Insurance and somehow sort out travel for him as soon as possible, then call the vets themselves.
I was going to start uni in september but if it's going to take months to resolve then I'm going to take a year out.

Glad you've found out what it is - fingers crossed for you that the treatment is quick and effective. Hope you managed to sort out transport etc, there is so much to think of - our Joe was in the hospital earlier this year, and it all went in a blur - there was so much to organise! Keep us posted......
