im posting this query to get acess to all the clever souls here & on behalf of someone else - so any answers would be welcome
a friend of mine has been riding an ex-polo hoss - retired from polo cos he began to buck - they've hacked him out before & he's been ok - couple of "playful" bucks but no big deal - yesterday they took him out - alongside their own well behaved boy - when they went to trot on some grass he went mental - huge bucks - really trying to get rider off - but did eventually stop - then asked him for canter up big hill -where there own horse goes off like a train - no problem at all - went very nicely - then on way home another huge bucking episode - the hoss is good & quiet on ground - was happy to be tacked up - no girth issues - any ideas

Has he had his back/teeth/saddle checked? They would be a starting point for me.

I would also go with the above, especially the back if he has been a polo horse, they do have some crashing falls and a lot of pulling about!!!

I agree with the others. Given that it's inconsistent bucking and doesn't sound like excitement he could be in pain.

I'd get everything checked, and don't leave out a chiroprator!

I have a retired polo pony and she's had her pelvis slip slightly out of place, as well as a couple of ribs. She never bucked on me, but what I did notice was a definite reluctance to trot. She'd *try* but either break down to walk, or up to canter. According to my chiro, trot is the most jarring gait, so not surprising that's where the problems show up. The obvious relief she showed when he popped her back into place was amazing! It took a little bit to convince her that she could now trot without pain, but she's fine now.

Lot of fast turns and such in polo, so these injuries are common.
