I usually give chunks of carrot, sometimes apple, but I also have a canister of "horse cookies" in my car :)

I always give mine polo's! Its her favourite by far she gets all excited when she sees a packet of polo's! I think its like sweets are bad for kids teeth but they still get them as a treat same for horses it might be bad for there teeth but its a treat as long as they not like practically fed on them then i doubt its that bad!

Yes, Jackson gets a sugar free Polo if he's done something especially good - I try to make sure he doesn't get more than 3 or 4 a day. Even if they're sugar free, I'm still not convinced they're harmless :o What is sorbitol anyway? I prefer to give him things like linseed lozenges etc that have no refined sugar or molasses etc. in them at all.

I give mine polos, though not all time as he gets a bit demanding, so its as and when I feel like it. Oww so meanny.

Theres a retire person down the road from where I keep my horsey. They like my boy so much that when they go out to walk the dogs they always take carrots up to my horse. I don't see the person every day but they tell me that they do go up every day with the carrots. The person has been doing it religiously for a number of years.
It is quite funny cos if I'm in the field with Chunky he will suddenly take off towards the fence. I look round and the two dogs are on the way up the road followed by there owner. Chunky sees them coming a mile off. He's at that fence waiting. So funny. But can be annoying cos I don't feel like his owner sometimes when he does that.
Apparently its the first thing on the shopping list each week. They tell me that they buy carrots especially for the horse. When they told me how much they pay for them each week I was gob-smacked. I said they didn't need to do that. But they said that they wanted to, as they adored him so much.

So I have to remember that he gets two or three carrots everyday when I am thinking about how much food I give him.

Be careful how many sugar free ones you feed to your horse as the sorbitol can give them the squitters (humans too!!!)

I had a suspicion about that :D What with the magnesium and the polos, poor Jackson should have permanent squits, but as everything that plops out appears normal, I guess I must be OK, dose wise :o

My friend once had a bad sore throat and ate a lot of sugar free throat lozenges without reading the small print... She hasn't made the same mistake again :D

I give mine sugar free polos but I'm pretty stingy about it, it could be classed as blackmail.

He gets a a couple after having his bridle put on (always keen to have his bridle on) and I give him a couple after I've ridden...as soon as I dismount. I hope that if I had an unscheduled dismount he'd hang around for a mint rather than legging it.

Ours mainly get apples, carrots, horsebix or codlivine crunchies, occasionally give them polos or mints though!

I dont feed polos cos i dont have them - i dont like them! Trebor Xtra strongs are another story entirley ;)

my friend wont give her horse them cos he likes them too much and gets really nippy and pushy after one.

I always have a few horsebix on hand! (curly likes the honey ones). i dont feed many treats but she gets one when she deserves one.

We tend to use a combination of lucie nuts, chopped up apple and chopped up carrot for clicker though madam does like the Blue Chip bites as well (which I got from Tescos at less than £2 a bag!

my dad recently bought extra strong polos and thought the horses would like them... he was not wrong :p
i feed herbal treats, carrots a lot (cheaper than herbal treats) and i finished a pack of Blue Chip treats today that Bay Mare mentioned.. they are no longer in stock :( i also give broccoli stalks when we have had broccoli for dinner. carrot are my most regular treats.
i had a giant bag of hilton herbals that were great but i ran out :(
one of my friends gave her highland fish and chips as a one off

RS ponies/horses love Polos, particulary rhose ones with the litte minty blue bits in :p

Obviously, you have to be carefull that they don't learn bad habbits when the younger kids give them treats so often.

We don't advise it with our ponies as it does encourage them to nip and with society and litigation as it is today it can cause a lot of problems!!!

Gem has polos (the spearmint ones, so i can share!), all the usual veg and fruit, and on special occasion she has weetabix! She goes crazy for it bless :)

But I always feed via a food bucket, as a pony on my yard is so rude and naughty as a little girl owns her and constantly gives treats over the fence/door. Shame really but there's nothing you can do.

I don't do treats. I don't think Joy would atke the mick but the pony she shares the field with would mug you given half the chance so I never got into the habit. :)
