we've always called it chase-me-charlie. we have jumping days at the yard quite often for charities, and we usually end up with a staff chase-me-charlie or staff gymkhana games on the school ponies. the highest i've done in one of these was 4'4 - very scary!

We used to do the Chase me Charlies, when I rode at Pony Club. It was always alot of fun, though I would always chicken out really early. A friend of mine always used to win them, as Banner, her horse, was such a brilliant jumper, he would have jumped the moon is she asked him. One occasion I can remember, the jump got to be an A grade height, and though Banner cleared it, no-one else would dare try.

Yep! Seen it, done it, got the T-shirt, retired the T-shirt! We call it Down and Out or Chase-me-Charlie, in my extremely young and and foolish days we would do it bareback! My bareback record was 3'6" and then I was only out because the pony was only 13.2hh and I kicked the pole off with my feet! I've managed about 4'6" with a saddle before, nowadays I cringe at the thought of 3'6" with a saddle.

Played it in the riding school. Called Down and Out. Whahh I was out as my little pony wnated to follow horse in front got too close and we could not jump. Probably would not do it now though. Me that is not pony.

We played once and this girl in my lesson group who had herself a "grandPrix showjumped" would drop out after 3'3... and was allways between me and jorden lol... we would go higher and higher and either we had to make a mistack or we would both be winners because we wern't allowed to jump any higher lol

We used to call it Knock Down and Out, though I prefer Puissance :D ;) . Anyway, the first year I did it (4 years ago now) I got to 4'3". Two years ago I got to 4'9", and had a blast! It's interesting cantering down the line and being face-to-face with the fence  .

This is over 4'6" that same year...

Played it years ago, called it Chase me Charlie...

Highest I cleared was 4' 2" - just me though, Mac (pony) put in a stop and waited for me on the other side....

our jumps aren't quite as flash as dragoon's! this is me on fred (sabinas gold sovereign), petal's half brother, doing a chase-me-charlie. we went up to 3'8 (scary on a 14hh pony). the 4'4 one was on polly, the crazy sweet itch mare.

I've always wanted to do a chase-me-charlie but never have.

I always chicken out jumping at home. But if I was at a show I would go for it cos I like to win!

When I was 12 we used to have gymkhanas at my riding school. I was riding a pony called Copper who was a sweet wee jumper. We entered a game of Chase Me Charlie and we were in the final 2. We got up to 1.15m (don't know in foot?) and then they put the jump up. I was the first to go and everyone was going you can do it! You have to win this because the person I was jumping off against didn't belong to the riding school. So I got myself all psyched up and set off before they had finished setting the jump up I was so nervous! Copper was put off by the people, crashed the whole lot and I managed a nasty bruise on my thigh. The other person cleared it and won, but I was still stoked with second! Plus my instructor was getting more and more nervous as she watched the jump just get higher and higher!! It was then that she offered me Cheers to ride and I ended up buying him and show jumping but that is another story :D

I've always wanted to play this game, but my instructor always said no. Maybe someday I'll get to play it.

We call it Chase me Charlie here in Aus too. We used to play it in Pony Club a fair bit but i don't like it much... When you see little 12 year olds on little ponies that normally do 60cm showjumping heading full speed at a huge jump that you know that can't make... I think it's unwise to push your horse to do more than he can and too quickly just for the sake of a blue ribbon or beating everyone else....
It's good fun on a nice jumper though.

Hey!

Oh my god that sounds SO fun. I am going to try that one day... it sounds awesome. I did something like that... while on a trail ride we had set up different cross country jumps and the last person left was the winner... well me and my friend both never backed down so we were tied. but we had jumped a little rock wall... hay bales, ditches, and so on lol. ;)

I would be way to chicken to play, as I know which ever pony I'm riding would refuse! :( I think I've got some kinda confidence crisis! However, I would do the comp, if I was on Fern, who loves to jump, and is about 16 hh! The only problem is - she doesn't like little jumps!

oh wow, i love chase-me-charlie! It's my fave!
My 14.1hh New forest pony gets sooooooo amazingly excited when we do chase-me-charlie though! He loves it. Last month i entered one @ a local show and there were tonnes of horses that entered, including a proper talented show jumper that was about 16.2hh, and many more 15.3hh plus horses. I was one of the smaller ponies on my boy, Smarty who's only 14.1hh. We cleared 4ft3''.
Smarty is always centre of attension in chase-me-charlie, i think he shows off! He prances around on his toes, won't stop jogging on the spot, won't walk in a straight line (he insists on leg yielding everywhere!), he paws @ the ground, neighs as loud as he can. Then when he approaches the jump, he canters on the spot, then does huge bunny hops towards it (rears slightly then leaps forward) he also grunts and snorts towards it, then finally when he gets to the last few strides, bombs at it 100 mph!! LOL! He may just pu in a little buck after as well!
He does this all out of excitement, i can tell because as soon as i point him @ the jump he can't wait 2 jump it!

Whenever I hear about this I think it sounds like so much fun. I have to fight the urge to try it. I work so hard to keep my horse's schooling steady and comfortable, and I'm afraid he'll lose trust in me if I overface him. Perhaps it's an unreasonable fear and I'm just being overly conservative.

For those who do this, how has it affected your horse's training? Does it interfere or does it help make them bolder?

We do this and wider and wider for fundays. Our record was 4'6" high by my daughter then age 9 on a 12.2 pony (couldn't see it coming up to the jump) and the width record is 12' by one of our school cobs!

I LOVE chase me Charlie is so fun!!! At our last show my friend won by jumping the top hole of the wings which is 5ft6 but her horse is 17.1hh so she kinda has an un-fair advantage!!:p

we call it Chase me Charlie here in Aus too. It used to be a regular event in gymkhana's and at Pony Club. Milly has cleared 1.20m (I don't know what that is in feet) and it's great fun! :) :) :)
I'd like to try it on Sheree though - she loves to jump, and at 15.2hh is quite abit bigger than Milly so maybe she'd go even higher! hehe

Love,
Alex

I've never heard of that game before but it sounds like it would be awesome fun!
We have played freshmans, where we keep raising the course until everyone is eliminated.
I'm going to see if i can convince my friends to play chase-me-charlie i bet we'd have lots of fun:D

Hey, iv never played chase me charlie, But we do tip and out, when you keep raising the jump till one person is in the hasn't tapped it yet.

I would sooo chicken out on chase me charlie, but with tip and out you just have to keep going till you knock it ahh and my horse is a rather good jumper and doesn't like to touch the poles. I get very scared and just have to hold on.

I played it once and had a ball. I jumped the highest i had ever jumped when doing it. We got to 3'2" and me and one other person had a draw because the instructor would not put it up.

It's great funa dn i know i would not have had the guts to jump that high if i had not been following the lead horse.
