For all you peole in and around Sunderland I hear that strangles is kicking about. We had a bit of a scare on our yard last night when my friends horse came in with a swollen neck and temp. Vet was called and we have been told it does not look like strangles it could just be a reaction to a sting.

We've had a rumour here in Surrey too - but I think that's all it is, a rumour.
But i guess it's not worth the risk.

From what I could gather this is not rumour. Our farrier was on one before coming to us. Hopefully it did not have strangles then.

My sisters pony had strangles quite bad and my moms horse had it a bit too. My horse didn't have it and my old pony had the medicine but he didn't really have it.
We think it either came from my horse who I bought from an auction or the new ponies in the field next to us who also came from an auction. Be careful with ponies/horses from auctions.
My sisters pony had white discharge comming from her nose at first, then under her jaw by her neck she started to have swellings, when the burst she had to have them bathed and she had to have an injection everyday, strangles is a horrible virus don't let your ponies/horses get it, take lots of precaustions,

The strangles vaccine is nasty and can actually give your horse strangles (unpredictably). If you've had it before getting the booster is fairly safe but not always. That's probably why it's not available over there.
I also understand that our West Nile vaccine is forbidden in Europe, and horses who've had it in the US can't travel to Europe.

If your grazing is bad the horses may be starting to eat buttercups which, in some horses, causes the glands to swell significantly. Strangles is differentiated by extremely poorly horses ....they will not eat etc. Check the grazing ... if it is buttercups the swelling will generally go down overnight.

We have a sub species of strangles here at the moment.
The ostritches who have it on their yards are not calling it strangles, VERY similar symptoms, can give foals pneumonia wich can be fatal. They have not isolated their horses and are still moving them about.
Anyone thinking of buying horses from off shore islands get a nasal swab done before you buy or ship.

We had it down here in East Dorset last month, but only a couple of cases and fortunately the people were sensible and isolated their horses, and it seems to have gone now.

We've got it at the moment - one of the liveries bought a pony from a dealer and it came down with it within a fortnight. It's been in isolation ever since and is now doing well. So far the rest are clear - fingers crossed then. It's odd though as the vet doesn't seem that bothered about it - certainly not as bothered as the owners.

The sub species has turned into full blown strangles now, so beware the island of UNst has it so be careful buying in ponies from Shetland.
Every visitor to is is boot dipping and hand washing before they are allowed to touch the horses. It is so difficult as tourisits see the ponies in the hill, go and speak to them then come riding with us.....
We are handing out leaflets to warn all the tourists not to go to their riding schools without washing all their gear first just in case they take it home with them.

One of the girls on the yard was advised not to go to Durham County show this weekend with the foal due to strangles breaking out not too far from the filed where they hold the show. Getting too close now.
