Meet Jake, he's a 14.2hh pony, we think he's possibly welsh sec D, but not entirely sure, which brings me onto my first question, what do you think his breeding is?

Secondly, we're hoping if he settles in well that Jake might be able to become an RDA pony as so far he seems to have a very quiet temperament and has shown no problems undersaddle. RDA weight chart doing the basic sum of BW/6 estimates he can take 13 stone, is this a realistic estimate? Could he possibly take more than that? He's a chunky fellow and has a fair amount of bone.

Anyway, here is the handsome chap:

I really hope he stays for RDA as we've all fallen in love with him, he's got his first couple of lessons on Saturday so fingers crossed he takes to it well :D

i would probably say about 13stone, but its not alwaysa case of what they can carry isnt it what they are happy carrying? my 16hh was perfectly capable fo taking 13stone but when my friend got on her ears went flat back and she just started rearing:confused::o

i also think hes welsh d, possibley a welsh d cross.
:D

OOO wow, hes gorgeous! And amazingly shiny! :D

I agree with Anna15 about it being what they can carry happily too. :) Don't forget, most saddles weigh around a stone or so.

Ooh yes i.e. taking into account the tack as well, we will probably put a rider weight limit of 12 - 13 stone on him, as his saddle is a synthetic pony thorowgood and weighs practically nothing!

So far he's been quite happy with his rider purposefully "plonking" herself on him to see if he's ok with weight. At the moment it's the case of proving to rest of RDA committee that he is a reasonably weight carrier, as they seem to think that ponies can't carry as much as horses , so thought I'd get some ideas from here as to what people thought :D

We're going to take him to an inhand m&m class on Sunday on the basis that he's a welsh sec D as I think that's the most likely option - he's got that lovely welsh head and broad chest. Think we're going to have to get him freezemarked as well, as have had a few comments from the gypsy kids as well as others as we ride past of "oooh that's a rather nice cob", and people have tried to break into our field before!!

He is lovely isn't he :D Just let me know when you've got some free time and you're welcome to come to stay. I can't guarantee Jake will still be here as if we dont' have him for RDA he'll be up for sale :(

Would just say, I wouldn't want to put more than 13 stone of unbalanced rider on him. He may be happy carrying a bit more well balanced, fit, weight, but bare in mind this might not the case in lessons.

I'm a on the committee of my local Riding for Special Needs group. The weight limits for the ponies/horses we use are usually quite a bit less for our riders than for able bodied riders. the RSN riders can be unbalanced, lack muscle tone and occasionally make sudden shifts with their weight. We have a similar cob that we use and although she would carry 13 stone of able bodied rider, her max limit for RSN is 11 stone.

Oh yes, we would take into account the possiblity of unbalanced riders - I was more wanting to get a general idea of the maximum weight he could carry of a balanced rider, as we can then work out how much weight of unbalanced rider he can take. We tend to take each rider individually and assess which horse would be more suitable to carry them - some riders are heavier yet very good balanced riders, others are lighter yet ride a lot heavier.

Hey,

He's lovely!

I was going to say about RDA riders being heavier for horses to carry than able bodied riders due to various factors including muscle tone and trunk stability (I used to volunteer at RDA) but you know that already!
