Has anybody taken any of the BHS stage exams by doing it part time? Is it possible to do it without owning a horse.

Not sure what i want to do really as I am a nurse at the moment and would need to keep doing my 1 night shift a week and because i have kids i couldn't be a full time student at the moment, but i do know i don't want to carry on nursing (other than bank/agency work like i do now) and would love to work in the horsey industry, maybe instructing?

I live 20 mins away from gleneagles so do have a training centre very close by and i know they do evening classes, and they also do a 12 week intesive course which gets you all 4 stage exams and your instructors certificate (not sure of all the details though)

The main thing is i am now 32 and not sure if i should really be considering a change into working with horses or stick with my nursing and buy my own horse but maybe think about doing one or two of the stages just for persobnal satisfaction

what do you think?

Go for it! I did it at night - worked full time and then did teh bhs by studying myself and getting one lecture a week from an AI near me. Its off putting at the start but its not that hard at all - after all its studying about horses so its not as bad as school or college work. Anyone with some horse experience and common sense can do it and gleneagles is an excellent place so its brilliant that you have those kind of facilities near by. Id love to have been able to do a structured night course but there was nothing near me so I just applied for my exams and looked around for an AI - I reckon it would be more fun in a group with a structured course.
Im 26 and did my stage 2 and 3 last year I didnt do it just because I want to be an RI I did it to challenge myself and give myself a qualification in something I love. It has improved my confidence no end
Your never too old to go for your dreams x

Hi I am 26 and changing career to work with horses too. I am going to Oatridge full time to do an HNC in horse managment but want to do my BHS exams too.
I am considering going to Glenaeagles as well to do them (live in Edinburgh with 2 kids so can't do the fast track course as I think it requires you to live on site for 12 weeks).

You only live once and although I have been put off by the low wages and stuff, I know it is what I really want to do so I am just going for it.

I did my stage 1,2 & 3 part time going once a week on Saturday(at BCA).
I passed my 1 & 2 but wernt confident enough for the jumping for stage 3.

It can be done, I think you need to be up to the level as they are like refresher courses.

Good luck :)

Yes you can take your BHS exams part time, most riding centres even small riding schools offer training and some hold the exams there as well.

I did my BHSAI straight from school and worked with horses for around six years. I got to the age where I started to think about the future and buying a house ect but could not afford it with such a low salary.

I decided to give up what I loved to earn more money, Yes I now own my own horse, house, cat ect but am stuck doing a job that I dont like much. One day when the financial pressure has lightened I will be returning to working with horses
